Women’s magazines, through the ages, have been the go-to writing opportunity for both seasoned and amateur writers. There are literally thousands of women’s magazines, covering all aspects of the female existence; from basic gossip publications, to health, parenting, dating, the list goes on. Because there are so many publications dedicated to women, many of them will accept work from freelancers without the promise of payment. Many also regularly give away prizes for tips and photographs.

Bitch Media publishes engaging, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. They invite freelancers to submit articles between 1,000 and 2,500 words in length. They encourage writers to read a few copies of the magazine before deciding which department their article would best fit in. Payment is $200 for features – upon publication.

Room Magazine is Canada’s oldest literary journal by, and about women. They work with an editorial calendar or ‘Themed issues’ so they expect content months ahead of the publication date. This publication does not accept full manuscripts or articles. Please query first.

They pay up to 120 CAD upon publication.

14. Austin Woman

Austin Woman covers information relevant to, and revolving around women in Austin Texas. Currently, they have no freelance opportunities but feel free to pitch the editor. Payment would be negotiated if you get a commissioned article.
