Quitting A Few Steps to Success

quiting successI was reading Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich today when I came across two very important stories (see them below) that is about the reality in the lives of many entrepreneurs and individuals, these stories inspired me to come up with this post.

A particular Mr. Darby was determined to dig until he comes across gold, he tried and tried without getting results for weeks, after weeks of hard labor Mr. Darby came across iron ore, he covered the spot and went home to tell his family and relatives about his discovery, they all contributed for him to get the machinery he will need to help in his quest. In time, the Machinery was shipped and Mr. Darby Started moving the iron ore to sell to others, he gradually began to pay his debts, it will only take a few more moving and he will have eliminated all his debt and even have more profits to live his desired lifestyle, unfortunately for Mr. Darby, he discovered he has come to the end of the ore and after a few more digging he abandoned his quest – both for gold and the ore – believing nothing can be discovered again.

Mr. Darby sold his machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, the junk man eventually called an engineer whom he told to calculate if anything can still be discovered in that mine, based on the engineer’s calculation it was discovered that it only took 3 more feets to discover true gold in the mine, they dug, and true to the engineer’s word the gold was discovered exactly 3 feets more.

This story pictures the life of a lot of people, they have worked seriously hard just to make sure they live the life of their dreams, they have given all they think they could to bring life into their business but at a point they decide to quit. Quitting isn’t the best thing to do at any point in time and I believe it should become your habit to tell yourself it’s either you succeed or die.

There are only a few steps between failure and success and you might never succeed until you realize this. You should begin to live your life as if you have no option than to succeed, you should begin to live your life as if failure itself is death – once this begins to happen success will become unavoidable for you.

The other story I read was of a young girl who came to meet a particular man in his mill (the young girl was the daughter of this man’s tenant), seeing the young girl, the man shouted on her asking her what she wanted and telling her to get out, the girl replied meekly, “My Mamma Say Send Her Fifty Cents”, the man shouted back at her, asking her to leave and telling her he is not going to give her the fifty cents, the child answered “Yas Sah” but remained on the same spot. Being engrossed in his job this particular man did not notice the girl was still around, after a few minutes the man lifted up his head to see the same girl on the spot and shouted on her to leave and that if she doesn’t live he will give her the beating of her life, this same girl answered the man “Yas Sah” but remained on the same spot. The man became very angry and took a barrel stave moving towards the child to beat her, instead of the girl moving backward she moved forward a step and shouted at the top of her voice “MY MAMMY’S GOTTA HAVE THAT FIFTY CENTS!”, astonished at the confidence of the girl this man dropped his stave and dipped his hand into his pocket to give the girl the Fifty Cents.

Take a look at the story of this girl, if she had left at the attempt of the man to beat her she would have lost the opportunity to get what she wanted.

Michael Jordan said, I have failed over and over and over again, and that is why I can succeed. How many of us see failure as a chance to quit?

The reality is, no true success comes without failure and how you respond to challenges and failures is what will determine how successful you will be in life.

I can also recall this famous quote by Winston Churchill Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

The main point here is, make sure you don’t quit, no matter the situation, no matter the problem. Admit failure is a part to your success and you’ll be ready to go.

Determination is Key

On your journey to success also make sure you make determination your ally, hardly is there any truly successful person who isn’t a product of determination. There is no way you can stop a man who is determined to achieve something, it doesn’t matter the odds against that person, it doesn’t matter the number of failures, it doesn’t matter how lost the fellow’s hope is there is only one alternative, and that is death. Believe you can’t achieve true success until you make up your mind that you will either achieve success or die.
Have you ever said this to yourself, only death can separate me from my success? That is the determination of the highest level possible.

When talking about being determined it is not only about making up your mind but also about giving it what it takes, determination also makes sure you’re not afraid of failure, no matter the form it takes.

Persistence is Inevitable

Persistency is the act of doing something continuously no matter how blocked the road may seem. Being successful goes beyond people seeing you as normal, you have to go to a new level where they will begin to see you as insane. Is it media coverage you want for your startup and you think the best thing to do after trying to get the coverage to no avail is to give up?

There is great power in not giving up and every legitimate attempt you make to try again after you have failed will take you a step closer to your success.

Do Something

Take a look at your life, your business, your career; are you still far from achieving success? Don’t give up yet, you can still achieve something great.

    Hi Oni,

These are some inspiring stories, just a few steps away from success and yet people give up easily. Persistence and determination play a big part on that and people need to cultivate that mindset in whatever things they do.

Thanks for sharing this great post.

Thomas Edison tried over 10,000 methods before succeeding at inventing the light bulb. I remember a story where someone asked him how it felt to fail so many times and he responded that he never failed, he just found 10,000 ways not to do it.

I have also read this book and its amazing, I also liked the story in which leader burned all the ships after reaching at the land of enemies. And he said to his followers that we can only go back alive if we win this war and fortunately they won.
This shows if you focused on a particular thing no one can seperate you to get that.
Great post oni keep it up 🙂

Although determination is a key element in having success, it doesn’t mean you have to overdo it. I think today, that girl would have gotten a beating for sure, I would go for the flee option :)).

But, leaving something you do just because you didn’t succeed the first time is just plain laziness, you should try until you have exhausted all your options and know that there isn’t anything else you can do. Of course it’s just my opinion, you guys can always disagree !

  8. Hi, Very useful article. Thanks admin

i loved the way you related it to Napoleon Hillâ??s , very expressing!! i do share and agree with all the points , in fact , it’s about time , for me , experience matter , so people don’t absolutely have to give up and start to “stop carrying on” and as you said , determination is a key !! sUre !!! :)) very good post !!

  11. Hi Oni,

    Powerful post you have here.

I agree. If you give up easily when times get tough, there’s no way you or your business can possibly succeed. By making mistakes and learning from them, you improve.

After all, without mistakes, how can you get better?

Have confidence that you’ll succeed, for it’s the determination to refuse failure that will get you far.

      Exactly Christina,

Giving up destroys all chances of you succeeding but if you keep trying know one knows what you can achieve.

I think determination and persistence is one of the most important thing if one wants to hit the peak called success. Nice post, gives us a lot of things to ponder about

  15. I actually read this book and found it very helpful and inspiring. He made a great point in the book about temporary defeat and failure, and that is failure is no match for persistence. Temporary defeats usually force people to give up right before they succeed. However, as long as you remain persistent you can never really fail at anything.

  16. Indeed, there are no easy ways in achieving success. A lot of obstacles are met, you may stumble and fall but its a must to get up and stand up. There are several reason why you need to, but one thing is for sure Never give up because its your only ace to get into the top.

  17. Alan Mater says:

Those are two powerful stories, Oni. Sadly I see a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs give up when they’re so close to reaching success. I was almost at that point once, and it’s because of stories like this, the encouragement of my peers and the blogging community that I didn’t give up. I’m so glad now that I didn’t throw in the towel.

    Hello Onibalusi
I like Napoleon Hill’s story and thoughts, These are the really nice and inspiring thoughts have described here. it reminds me all things again….

  19. Leo says:

Two very inspirational stories indeed, I especially liked the first one. It shows that you shouldn’t rely on what you know – or what you think you know – and find “experts” fields that are complementary to yours to help you get farther.

One shouldn’t stop until they have exhausted ALL the possibilities!
