How to Become a Successful Affiliate: 3 Pro Bloggers Reveal their Secret

affiliate marketing by probloggersThis is a epic and must read guest post by Codrut Turcanu, a successful and highly experienced internet marketer.

For bloggers who want to learn how to become a successful affiliate, but don’t know how:

Is your blog not making the money it deserves? Are you at a cross-road? Should you move forward, shift your strategy, change your niche or maybe quit?

These are all insightful questions pro bloggers often asked themselves.

Let’s face it. Making money online is not easy. Write a post and add $1,000 overnight into your paypal account. Yeah, right! We don’t believe this myth. Gurus just use this as HYPE to make you and me, buy their stuff.

Does this mean we’re doomed to never make any real money online?

How come pro bloggers are doing it and we’re just hopelessly watching?

Fortunately, success leaves clues. Pro bloggers can teach you and me how to cash it on, or at least, give us some hints that we can take it to the bank (if we know how).

Aren’t you as excited as I am when reading about some unknown blogger turned into six-figure earner? Don’t you like to know how others are making a living online via affiliate blogging?

In my 11-years online, I noticed what all these super affiliate bloggers have in common. I listened to what they say and how they are actually making big money online. And after interviewing 100’s of bloggers, I understand this is a common practice among pro bloggers.

I’m talking about 4 key elements (approaches that never fail):

1. They know what their visitors want & need (research + close listening = success)

2. They focus on what works the best and dump the rest (that’s why they continue blogging)

3. They do not rely on AdSense advertising or sponsors (the least effective profit methods)

4. They don’t focus on money, but rather connect their audience with helpful solutions & ideas

Now that we know this, let’s dive in and discover the “secrets” that count…

Pro Affiliate Blogger Featured Story #1 – Pat Flynn

Pat-Flynn-SmartPassiveIncome

The more you give, the more you get back in return.”

Pat Flynn, ex 9-to-5 employee turned into full-time blogger and online entrepreneur. He says getting laid off was the best thing ever happened to him. He teaches passive income streams and affiliate marketing strategies through his blog.

Money-making model: affiliate product reviews, ebooks and niche sites

Pat has several products and niche sites, outside the Internet Marketing industry, which makes him one of the few pro bloggers that not only teaches “make money online” but practice it quite well.

It’s funny to hear how others claim to be making money on the Internet, when they actually just read a book about it. To me, nowadays standard is: just claims – no proof, over promise, lies.

Monthly revenue: not disclosed

I will never affirm something I don’t know for sure, that is why I prefer to leave the monthly revenue figure secret in this post you’re reading now.

Pat’s January 2011 income report gives us some clues though…

$15,110.25 in revenue generated – from affiliate commissions alone. His total was a bit over 35k, including earnings through his non IM niche sites and products.

Tips on How to Become a Successful Affiliate:

“The way I earn money with affiliate links in ALL of my online businesses is by promoting only products that I have used, and only what I would recommend to my friends who want to achieve similar results. I feel that anyone with an audience has a responsibility to do the same thing.

There’s something fishy about someone promoting Apple Computers who only uses a PC.”

What I Learned after Reviewing Pat’s Blog and Pro Blogging Model:

1. Focus on your audience (new/returning visitors, readers & subscribers) like nothing else

2. Always provide content that clicks with your audience (even if you make no money!)

3. You cannot afford to build your blogging foundation on one stream of income. Diversify your revenue model (without going over board) and multiply your traffic sources, regularly.

Pro Affiliate Blogger Featured Story #2 – Yaro Starak

Yaro-Starak-entrepreneurs-journeyYaro Starak is a full-time Internet entrepreneur. He created, managed and sold different online businesses since 1998 and currently teaches people how to make money blogging (full-time living) on his blog and through his mastermind course and coaching program.

Money-making model: affiliate product reviews and coaching programs

Yaro’s dedication to blogging led to creating his own program and course to teach others how to model on his success and replicate his results. Affiliate programs are a major part of his online income model. I suspect he easily makes six figures a year with affiliate marketing alone.

Monthly revenue: not disclosed

Through my research I’ve found an income report dated back in September 2007. Total revenue generated $10, 899, 83 via his blog. Affiliate commissions: $4,407, 96.

All this was raked-in when his blog was only 5,000 RSS readers fat.

4 years later and he’s probably making a lot more. His RSS feed counts now 104k. His mailing list is a major source of traffic to his blog. Notice, I’ve said mailing list, not RSS (big difference!)

Tips on How to Become a Successful Affiliate:

Affiliate income has gone on to become my second highest source of income in recent years, thanks in part to the increase in my audience reach. By combining my blog and email newsletter I can reach thousands of people with just one piece of content. By testing different products and recommending things I personally use myself, I’ve been able to earn as much as $50,000 in commissions selling just one product.” (Entrepreneurs-Journey.com)

What I Learned after Reviewing Yaro’s Blog and Pro Blogging Model:

1. It is not always about you; it’s your visitors that count and what they need help with.

2. Provide “pillar” content that helps people, not wastes their time.

3. Affiliate marketing in combination with products & services of your own is the ideal model. It expands your revenue like never before, particularly if you have traffic coming in or access to a mailing list of your own.

Pro Affiliate Blogger Featured Story #3 – Robb Sutton

Robb-Sutton-BloggingLabs“Blogs make money because they fulfill a need.”

Robb Sutton, fellow Yaro Starak student, was named #30 on IncomeDiary’s Top 50 Most Influential Bloggers of 2009. What is even more impressive, his non marketing blog – Bike198 – received over $100,000 worth of bikes, related items and accessories before its first anniversary

Money-making model: writing (ramped) product reviews

Whether he’s writing on bikes or blogging (e.g. BloggingLabs.com), one thing is for sure: Rob’s passion makes him more than just a living online – a lifestyle others just hear and dream about.

Monthly revenue: not disclosed

Robb doesn’t boast about his income. He is just (quietly) generating cash, doing what he loves the most: writing product reviews and blogging.

Tips on How to Become a Successful Affiliate:

“You can’t be in the review blogging arena just for the free stuff. You will end up burning out quickly and making people mad in the process. Mix it up and include other types of articles and really think of your blog as more of a business and online magazine.”

(source: AuthenticConnections)

What I Learned after Reviewing Robb’s Blog and Pro Blogging Model:

1. If a biking blog can make money and get free (review) products, sky is the limit.

2. Affiliate marketing works in (almost) any niche, so you have no excuses. Just do it!

3. Product reviews help you, your visitors & vendors. It’s a win-win-win formula for success.

Remember, Oni started this blog on April 2010 and said it was the best decision of his life. You want to follow the foot steps of those who’ve been there and done it, not those who fake it (e.g. wannabe gurus and scam artists).

Affiliate marketing (and writing product reviews) is a proven business model, if done right.

Diversify your online income portfolio. Watch pro bloggers at work and “copy-cat” their methods.

If you have any comments, I’d love to chat with you and expand the discussion.

What is your preferred blog revenue method? Why? Do you also generate affiliate commissions?
