10 Ways to Generate Quality Backlinks without Depending on Your Content

When it comes to SEO it is very important that you realize that link building is one of the most critical elements you must consider. You can have great content, you can optimize your posts and make sure it has the right title tags and keyword density but ultimately it is the number and kind of links you have that will make a difference.

I know the title says I will be giving you link generation tips that don’t depend on your content. The reason for this is that I have just started a niche site and since I know my content on my niche site won’t be as exceptional or anywhere near that on this blog it obviously won’t attract much links to make it rank so I have to do something to get those links.

You should also realize that it doesn’t matter whether you have a blog, an online portal or a niche site the tips in this article can be used to generate tons of quality backlinks without depending on your content. I have used some of them, and the others I have researched to ensure they work.

1. Guest Blogging: The number one link building tactic I use the most and plan to be using more often in the near future is guest blogging. Guest blogging for other blogs can be one of the best ways to get quality backlinks to your blog because in my own experience the kind of backlinks you can get from this source is far better than that you will get from other sources.

Guest blogging is the process of writing for other blogs and in return you will be given an author bio below your post where you can let the readers of your guest post know more about you. You can then make use of the author bio by using the anchor text of your choice to link to the page you’d like it to rank for. So that you have a better idea below is an image to show you a quality link I got from a particular guest post of mine.

link building - example link from guest bloggingThe above is an example of my author bio from one of my Problogger guest posts and the funny thing is that at the time of writing this post I now rank number 3 (or number 2 in some cases) for the keyword “young entrepreneur blog” even though my blog title or meta tags presently has nothing to do with it. Below is proof of that.

link building - proof of guest blogging links from google

There is no debate about this. Guest blogging works great for link building.

2. Blog Commenting: I know a lot of people underestimate this particular tactic, I do too, but even though it isn’t as effective as some of the other tactics commenting on other blogs can be a great way to build quality backlinks to your blog.

Search engines still give value to comment links especially if they are dofollow so if properly done, commenting on other blogs can be a great way to generate quality backlinks to your blog.

When it comes to commenting on blogs in other to build quality links I’ll recommend you don’t just visit a blog and write half-baked comments because it will eventually be removed and might lead to your site being under the search engine’s suspicion. Make sure you write valuable comments and only use your name in the comment field, if there is a specific keyword you want to rank for you might as well use the format {Your Name | Your Keyword}. In my case it would be {Onibalusi Bamidele | Internet Marketing Advice}. So that you see how this works below is an image to show you a website of mine that has no content on it or a mention of my name but ranks number 8 on Google for my name (whereas some blogs with several mentions of my name don’t).

link building - onibalusi bamidele blog commenting worksI commented on a lot of blogs using my name to link to this particular site of mine and even after several months of me abandoning it I still find it ranking on page one for my name. Below is a screenshot to show one of my comments linking to it.proof that commenting works - my comment on blogussion

I have linked the above image to that particular comment, you can click the image to visit the particular post – my comment is the third one on the site – you will see it links to UltimateTrafficFormula.com.

P.S. In case you’re in need of dofollow blogs to comment on, I have a list of dofollow blogs on this blog.

3. Article Marketing: Article marketing is another link building tactic similar to guest blogging, just not as powerful. You can easily build more quality and authoritative backlinks to your website using this tactic, especially if you’re a niche marketer because it is one of the easiest forms of backlinks to get. All you need to do is write quality posts (which you can easily outsource) and submit them to some of the top article directories you know to get the best from this.

Another important thing to consider when trying to get the best from building links using article marketing is interlinking your articles on the article sites to each other. This will slightly increase the value of each article thus directly impacting the quality of link your blog is gaining from that article. If you want to learn more about this tactic you can read Glen Allsopp’s article on the subject titled Link Trio.

4. Social Media Sites: There has been a lot of debate about SEO vs. Social Media in the past but I don’t think that debate is really relevant because search engines are now basing a large percentage of their ranking factors on social media sites. Do you know that if a particular article of yours could bring about enough engagement from some of the top social media sites online it could make a huge impact on your rankings and catapult your post to the first page in the SERPs?

Don’t only focus on link building. Focus more on building and encouraging social media interaction around your site. Make sure posts are easy to tweet, share, digg, stumble etc. and ensure it is easy for readers to spread the word about your post to any social media site they want. This will be helping you on the long run.

5. Directory Submissions: I don’t know exactly how effective this is, but I know it works great.

As with every other tactic with which you can build quality and authoritative backlinks to your website getting the best from directory submissions has to do with you only submitting your blog to the top directories online – not just in the numbers. I mean it doesn’t matter how many directories you submit to, it won’t make much impact if they are not highly trusted and respected by Google so in this case I’ll recommend you only submit your website to the top directories with at least a pagerank 6.

Some of the top directories people are getting results from are the DMOZ Directory, the Yahoo Directory and the BOTW Directory.

6. Submitting Press Releases: This is a somewhat old tactic, but believe me, it works. There are several times I have wanted to write a blog post that needed facts to back it up, I tried everything I can but the only thing I could find to back me up was a press release. When linking to the fact in my blog post do you think i will link to the press release or not? Press releases might not give you that much authoritative link juice but the joy of making use of them is in other bloggers and the media finding and linking to your press release.

In order to get the best results from your press releases all you need to do is look for what people desperately want, write the best press release you can about it and build a few backlinks to your press release to give it some link juice so it can get to the top for its keyword. In a matter of time that press release will start gaining a lot of backlinks which will eventually reflect on your blog.

7. Forum Posting: Forums still work for building links, in fact they work great! All you need to do is be an active contributor on the forum of your choice and also make effective use of your forum signature. You should also ensure you contribute mostly to the sections relating to your blog and anchor text as that will establish the relevancy of your link with the search engines.

There are several top forums you can post on but we all know that search engines value dofollow websites than nofollow so if you can get a list of the top dofollow forums in your niche, make use of it. Here’s a great article listing some of the top dofollow forums in various niches.

8. Video Marketing: Do you know that video sites are 50 times more likely to rank on the first page of Google compared to text based sites? Well, that’s the fact, and it spells the loss for those of us not making effective use of videos on our sites.

A great way to easily dominate the search engines is by making use of videos to market your blog because search engines respect video content more than text based content. This means you should do your best to create great videos, distribute it to various video sites and spread the word about it.

When it comes to using videos to build links to your blog you need to know that you won’t just get the links automatically. You have to make use of the right sections to ensure you retain a backlink to your blog. On most video sites, the best thing to do to ensure you get a link to your site is linking to your website in your video description.

9. Inter Linking: When it comes to link building a lot of people expect the focus to be on gaining external links from other sites but you will be amazed to see how some of the most underestimated link building tactics can bring significant results. Interlinking your blog posts will do you a lot of benefits because it will create a great structure that will make it easy for the search engines to crawl your website while still being able to associate your content with each other, it will also be able to pass link juice from some of the top articles on your blog to the less popular ones thereby giving them equal chances of ranking.

10. Freebie Marketing: Another great and effective technique for building links to your blog is by making use of freebies. These freebies can be in the form of an ebook, a free wordpress template or a free wordpress plugin. They need to be free and they also need to contain a link back to your blog. You should now do your best to distribute these freebies to as many channels as you can while encouraging your friends to also help you spread the word about it – the more people use these freebies, the more backlinks you are likely to gain.

No Follow vs. Dofollow

I know there has been a lot of obsession over dofollow since the term was brought into existence but the fact is there is little to no difference in the nofollow and dofollow tag. I’m not trying to tell you that you should start focusing your efforts on nofollow links, dofollow has more advantages than the nofollow tag but you should also not fail to realize that your links must be balanced – I mean the right mix of dofollow and nofollow links will have more impact on your rankings than you just amassing dofollow links. You can learn more about this by reading this article on WebProNews.

Conclusion

It is highly important that you know that link building success isn’t about the quantity of the link but the quality of the link. The above are 10 great ways to build quality backlinks to your blog without ever depending on your content.

I’d really appreciate if you can help me share this post on Stumbleupon. Every stumble makes a difference!

Very informative post thank you. It is amazing how many people do underestimate the power of backlinking. If you are too busy to do many of the above mentioned tips then it is time to think about outsourcing. In that way,you can move onto more important things and you are helping someone else to earn income, it is like spreading the love a little bit. Heaven knows where the world would be if everyone adopted this attitude.

  5. Tom says:

    Great post once again!

I really concentrated on social media interacting with people and problems they come across. In addition, if you can’t guess, blog commenting.

I think as long as the comment makes sense there’s no harm. Some people do it for the wrong reason, like spamming. I got a lot of spam this week since a lot of blogs I followed wrote about spam and tightening up your blog. Spammers are everywhere.

    • Onibalusi says:

Exactly! What many spammers don’t know is that they’re doing themselves more harm than good.

Wonderful points to build up backlinks… like the way you’ve presented them

  20. Hi Oni,

This list of tips is really helpful and so easy to understand! A lot of times, when I research for SEO tips, I get to sites that are all gibberish or don’t offer advice, just give teasers then say we have to buy the book first!

Thanks for being generous with your insights =)

    Frances

Aha, I’m really glad to hear that from you Topaz!

  21. kays jewelers says:

I agree with you that we have to go for both no follow and do follow links for fast ranking of our site.

    • Onibalusi says:

      I’m glad to hear that!

  22. Nico Julius says:

Interesting article, I was just looking for this. I’ve been running my blog for almost 6 months now. I have some traffic (+- 100 visitors/day), but almost all my visitors come to my blog via Google. But that makes sense because my focus was to get visitors from search engines. By generating backlinks I hope to get more diversity in my visitors (so not only visitors via Google), to get higher PR and just to have more visitors. I was thinking of also creating a Squidoo page.

    • Onibalusi says:

      Hi Nico,

      That’s great to hear.

great post oni, but I cannot do all of them, mostly I do are blog commenting and social media or social bookmarking, I;m afraid to do the other besides I don’t have much time, btw thanks for the brightside

    • Onibalusi says:

      Hi Aditia,

You don’t need to do all of them. Just select one that you love the most and focus on it πŸ™‚

  28. Hello Oni,

Another great blog post that makes me to say that ” oh my gosh, what a post..” Great tips about how to make links without depending on content, but this doesn’t mean that you ignore content completely.. remember the rule of online marketing success.. Content is queen and marketing is king..

    • Onibalusi says:

Yeah. Content matters a lot if you want your readers to stick!

  29. Sarah Russell says:

Oni – You make a great point on the whole nofollow/dofollow thing. Sometimes, I think people get so wrapped up in making sure they’re building the “right” kind of links, when Google definitely values them both.

Great tips, and a great post as usual!

    • Onibalusi says:

Since I kind select the kind of links I get when others link to me I wouldn’t obsess over it when building it myself – I’m not saying I’ll intentionally be getting links from nofollow blogs, though πŸ™‚

  30. Andreas says:

Social media connections are on the raise and you may get some links from relevant sites by connecting with fellow bloggers on social media sites who share the same interest.

    • Onibalusi says:

Social media is fast becoming a great part of our lives, it will be very dangerous to ignore it.

  31. Orlando SEO says:

Guest blogging is a great way to get link as well as spread your net of expertise. We have had a lot of success with this. BTW are you looking for any guest posts ;)?

    • Onibalusi says:

      Hi Orlando,

      Yeah. Guest blogging works great.

I accept guest posts if they’re exceptional – feel free to get in touch with me using the contact form of this blog.

  32. Pratap Reddy says:

I am using only few of the tactics. Now i will concentrate on others also. Thanks for sharing.

  33. shajjad says:

Firstly I follow Content strategy means creating great and helpful content
Then I do other steps. Such as commenting, forum posting, On site linking.
I am not good at guest posting and article, directory submission πŸ™ Now I am here to learn guest posting from your blog πŸ™‚
    Thanks for another great post..

    Shajjad

  34. 51 Website Design says:

Firefox has a plugin for when you need to see if blog-commenting allows a link to be dofollow’ed. I can’t remember the name, however; but you could easily type in something like “dofollow” in the Firefox addon section of the Firefox site. That’s what I’d do/did.

Also, I’ve been wondering about ways to actually promote my blog. My primary method would be to use social media (twitter, facebook, and google), and article marketing. I’m really skeptical of guest blogging, though. I don’t feel like I’d be successful in that particular role for some reason, but that may just be what makes me nervous about blogging… (?) the writing.

I’m still forcing myself to overcome this somehow, however. Any advice?

  35. Kalen @ Learn Internet Marketing says:

I agree with the guest blogging concept being #1. I think that article marketing isn’t as effective as guest blogging, it does have it’s own benefits. First of all, you can create multiple backlinks with a single article by submitting to numerous directories. You also have the opportunity for your content to go viral in the event other bloggers want to use your articles on their sites and gain many other links in the process.

The other great tactic is link baiting, but it is harder to do because you don’t have control over whether or not someone links back to you.

  36. Ernest @ unique wedding favors says:

    Hi Oni,

What have we got here? I was actually waiting for your new posts. And now here it is. The problem with me is that I really do not have any inkling about press releases. I think I need to check on this. Thanks Oni.

  37. DiNaRa says:

    Hi, Oni
As usual, your article has aroused so much discussion, good job!
I can agree with most points apart from directory submission. My attitude to this point is the following: you have to do it but in case with me it works not well, but you have to do it because everything should be done together as a whole. I get the least traffic from directories, and dmoz doesn’t like me at all πŸ™

  38. Richard C. says:

I am very excited to have found this post. I have been looking for ways to drive targeted traffic to my new blog using this method. I will try to implement and see how it works on my blog. Thanks.

  39. Ram Shengale says:

    Hi Oni,

I liked your post very much.

I had a question that I’m sure you can help me out with. I have a free ebook that I want to distribute on my blog. I want to use the system that you are using, to get the e-mail id and send the ebook through mail. And then using those e-mail addresses to send updates about my new posts. It would be great if you can help me out in this. If you have written any post about this or have a link of some other blog that would be helpful plz consider telling.
I know you might be busy with your work, take your time but do post a reply.

    Regards,
    Ram

  40. Missy says:

    Hi, Oni:

I have a question for you on Video marketing. If one creates a video and links to it for their target keyword, what else or how else to best use this video for SEO? As far as You Tube. Or is the trick to now upload it to other video sites again using your target keyword.

Or is it best to vary the anchor text when uploading to multiple video sites? And should the same video be uploaded, or a new one?

Ok. So it was more than one question. lol. I am eager to get into videos and video marketing for SEO, but have quite a few questions on how best to go about it.

    Look forward to your replies.

    Cheers,
    Missy

  41. Java Nature says:

    nice tips… thank you oni…

  42. Esha Putra says:

    Yeah, i’m agree with you…
but the most important thing to do backlink is don’t put your backlinking into an aggresive way(spam)…

  43. Emmanuel Uduezue | How To Make Money Online says:

    Great Post Oni.

i have used blog commenting to drive quality backlinks to my blog and it worked for me so i think blog commenting should be used by bloggers to build backlinks to their blogs.

  44. Watch Movies Online says:

Oni tips are great but i m not fully agreed with you unfortunately!
the reason is that if your content is not good so its mean that people who are coming over there are not coming to read your comment but they have their own benefits for what they are seeking on the blog what you will think when they will said “nice post” and on the other hand you know that your post is not good?????

  45. steam cabin says:

According to my experience we can get links through these strategies but when you create links from contents, they are more fruitful than these strategies.

  46. Thiet ke quang cao says:

This is a very helpful post. Thanks!

  47. Danielle @ Clickbank Auto Profits says:

Thanks for this list of ways to get good, quality links to your sites. It does take a lot more work to build links manually but the end result is so worth it when you know that your link structure will look natural and not spammy. I think it is the key to staying on top and not having to stress about some Google change coming along and wiping you off the map. I was just reading about the Farmer and Panda updates and it seems that having links from less than desirable sources was the root of a lot of peoples problems. Just do it right the first time around πŸ™‚ Thanks!

  48. Great article and it makes total sense but how much time do you (and others) spend on creating backlinks? I’m a virtual assistant and this all seems like a lot of work to fit in among my client work.

Just wondering how you schedule it all or do you pick and choose which strategies to use?

    Thanks!
    Christina

  49. Terje Sannarnes says:

Great link buildiing methods. Personally I use all these techniques for my website promotion strategies. Even if a link no follow it makes sense to obtain it. because each such incoming link generates some ammount of traffic to a website.

  53. Blog commenting is my favorite link building strategy; however, you may not use it when linking specific web pages with long URL because they may look like spam.

  54. buy traffic says:

For me the most effective way of link building process is Blog Commenting not like others that they keep on registering fake accounts just to put links to it.

    Hi,

Nice post. However, I feel the best way, in the long run, to generate huge amounts of traffic is ONLY great content.

forum posting and blog commenting is my favorite to build back-links, However I prefer auto approve blog commenting

  57. tamy zhou says:

Thanks trillions, thats very true. The ways you mentioned are some of the best.We use all of them and more often than not we also use some tools that help us to build banl links, though you have to be very careful of the tools you use.Article writting is possibly one of the best[so is guest blogging] as it gives you a platform to talk about your products/services.If you are into cars, you can always write about vehicles and the people who read your articles are more likely to visit your site for more information. In this way you are more likely to receive targeted traffic

  58. website designer delhi says:

very valuable tips on building links, thanks for sharing.

  59. Excellent tips Onibalusi. Every good internet marketer should be employing these tactics in addition to churning out amazing content for users. It can be a slow process, but it’s worth it in the long run.

  60. Your article is really descriptive. Good read. However I have found that QUALITY link building has to be more than posting on article sites, forums and more. One has to look for the Domain Authority or PR of Domain they are posting in, category relevance to their field, naturality of linking and many other such trivial points.

  61. Great post. Just created a health website and trying to build more back links to it. This was a very useful post to me because i’m still learning the how “seo” thing πŸ˜›

  62. Santosh Mishra says:

If you want to get your blog good ranking, you need to work on quality backlinks. Without backlinks your blog will be something like a ship without any radar. So, generating backlinks is important.

  63. Yummy Mummy? Really? says:

    Really informative post, thanks.

I write a parenting and beauty blog, but the principals appear to be the same whatever the subject matter, is that correct?

I find some of it a bit tricky to follow I’m afraid though. I don’t think I understand enough about meta-tags and the like to take fill advantage of some of the advice yet! But I have seen a mass increase in page views following another tip in your blog to post on what’s
trending; so thank you for that!

I will be sitting down to read your download later today.

    Thanks again,

    Louise

    I’ve subscribed too.

Thank you very much for sharing this great articles. Reading your articles gives me better understanding, escpecially on nofollow and dofollow linking. Sometimes it’s a bit confusing on both of these. But having mixed linking as you mention, I think much more reasonable. Cheer,

  71. Senior Care says:

Nice article ONI ! You have written such a nice and helpful article.
I’ve just a little doubt that search engines like Google are very strict to your content. So i would suggest to have quality content for google recommendation but when it comes to Bing & Yahoo, this article is very much helpful. I’ve found google also wants backlink from high PR Directories and sometimes it gives your priority without having right content.

  72. Tim Potter says:

Social media as I found out is very key. One thing I have been doing is adding a fan page on facebook. Since social media sites are crawled more regular then new sites. I create the fan page then I request google to crawl it. That fan page is linked to the content page and then it is index. Simple enough.

  75. Nice tips to get quality backlinks, but I DISAGREE on “without Depending on Your Content”!

OK, One can get lots of traffic and backlinks. What then? If the content on the website are crappy, nobody will comeback. It is not about just “backlinks”- it’s about user’s experience, reader’s interests. I disagree if you are trying to encourage CRAPPY content with lots of “quality” backlinks.

Yes, these tips are helpful along WITH good content on the first place. Thank you for sharing. Keep writing!

Online article submission on ezinearticles is getting harder. The reason is because ezinearticles has implemented a lot of measures which has made acceptance of articles there very stressful. I would love to see alternatives to ezinearticles very soon.

it was really interesting ,but making back links is so tiring ,but gonna do it on my blog anyway .but thnxx man… it really helped

  79. Blog commenting is the easiest & the fastest way to generate backlinks. As in forums and also in the case of directories we have to wait for their approvals. So I prefer blog commenting as well as Social Bookmarking for creating back links fast.

  80. Chetan Gupta says:

    Thanks for this.

Thank yo for sharing this type of information, usually people would not give these strategies away. All of the points you mentioned contribute to quality link building as I have used most of them.

  84. Adhitya Chandra says:

Google said, Backlinks show how popular our site is, and help googlebot indexing better. My suggestion is, do not ever use a automatic backlink generator or you will get sacked by google.
