3 Ways to Measure Link Quality

focus on link qualityThis is a guest post by Corey.

Link quality is arguably more important than the amount of inbound links to your site. A few quality links can be immensely more beneficial to your websites rankings and search results than 100s of links from unrelated directories or forums.

But how do I know the quality of the link opportunity you ask? Well, there are 3 metrics that can be used to quantify the quality of the link that you are looking to obtain on your website.

1. Page Rank (PR) – Page rank is Google’s equation for calculating the quality of the website, ranked from 0 to 10. The basic premise of the ranking is that each time another website link to your website it is essentially casting a vote of trustworthiness to your blog. By linking they are saying that they value your opinion enough to share it with their readers and customers. Links from more popular websites hold more weight as Google assumes that because they have more readers, the link to your site will be viewed more.

Another component to Google’s quality rank equation is the ‘spread’ or ‘share’ factor. This basically means that the more links there are on a page the less SEO juice that you link receives. So, if you are one of only 3 links on a high quality page, you will receive more power to your site. Adversely, if you are the 50th commenter on a low ranking blog post you probably are not going to see much benefit.

2. Domain Authority (DA) – This is another key factor in determining whether or not the link opportunity is worth obtaining. DA is a ranking calculation created by SEOmoz and is intended to calculate the relevance, authority and how likely the website is to ranking for its given keywords. This metric is derived from the root domain of the website and not any specific page. It is very important to be observant to this.

When checking for domain authority is it also key to check the website title tags and description to make sure that the website is somewhat relevant to yours. It is widely know that when ranking websites in search results, Google puts a heavy emphasis on whether or not the backlinks to the website are relevant.

3. Page Authority – Probably the heaviest and most important factor when search for link opportunities. The page authority of the website directly shows how much influence you will receive from the page that you are gaining the link from. High PA pages are routinely shared and linked to in bulk quantities. Both of these characteristic are very important to search engines. This means that people highly value this specific page and if you are able to get a link from it you will gain a boost in the rankings.

I am sure you are wondering how you can check these ranking factors. Well, there are many tools that you can use to do this. Depending on what browser you use, there are a wide array of plug-ins and utilities that you can add on to view these factors. SEO Site Tools and MozBar are the two best, in my opinion, for both Firefox and Google Chrome.

With SEO Site Tools you are able to view the Page Rank (PR) of every website that you visit discretely in you browser window without clicking a button. Then if you want more information bout the site you simply click the tool bar and it reveals a wealth or info about the site. This is a great tool for competitive analysis as well as link building. This is especially beneficial for seeing about the closely related the website is to your topic.

The MozBar is a tremendous tool by that has 2 great functions. First you can enable it to display page information, including domain and page authority, about the current page. Additionally you can see the amount of internal and external link the page has, which are both important for competitor analysis as well.

The other functionality is a search results page overlay. When enables the add-on shows the domain and page authority of every result in your search. This is extremely helpful when using queries for link building opportunities.

Being aware of the quality of the links that you are trying to obtain are vastly important to any link building campaign. These metrics can help you save a lot of time by helping you to focus on the links that are going to provide you with the most beneficial results.

  1. I would also add Alexa Rank.

    • Corey says:

I have used Alexa in the past but have found the ranking system to be a bit finicky. Have you had success using it?

    • Atish | Blogging Tips says:

I don’t think Alexa should be included because there are many ways to get high alexa rank. getting alexa rank is in your hands. Just install a alexa tool bar in your firefox browser and open your site, Now keep refreshing the site after every 4-5 minutes. After few day you can see a sudden improvement in the alexa rank of your site.

This is the reason I don’t think alexa should be added here.
The list complete, thanks Oni for the superb share

      • Blogging Park says:

You are right Atish, but still alexa are popular ranking system throughout the blogger world.
Anyway Oni,thanks for share this topics,I use SEO doctor to see page details, like now I can say you have 131 links both (internal and external)with page score of 61%.I don’t know why this score is low, anyway you are using rel=canonical for this page,so I am sure you are not getting duplicate content issue with this page, but I am still get this. Please suggest something.

        • Atish says:

          thats true too

      • I agreed with what you’ve said here @Atish, Alexa should not be among the tool for this check because there are ways to trick the alexa ranking but focusing on Google PR and DA as Corey said in the post is the best way to know how your website is going, either better or not.

Thanks a lot for the share 🙂

    Hi Corey,

    Nice roundup here!

As I continue to learn more about SEO I become less concerned with the number of sites I visit and more focused on the quality and relevance of the websites.

It makes total sense Google and other search engines give us props when Big Dawg sites in your niche give us some link luv. Any blogger should keep this in mind while designing their link-building campaign.

It’s similar to the birds of a feather analogy. They do flock together, and search engines and other bloggers know it.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Corey says:

Thanks Ryan! I think that bloggers sometimes focus on sheer quantity of links rather than quality. And quality links are the one that help your ranking the most, IMO.

  4. susan says:

Earlier I considered only the domain and the page rank, but I have never thought that page authority is very important. All this because of my little experience in promotion. Thanks a lot for the advice.

    • Corey says:

You are welcome! High page authority links can be hard to come by but provide a lot of juice if you can get them.

  5. Graham Lutz says:

I’ve been working on a linking strategy that that two layered…like links to a video that links to me and things like that.

It’s been cool to see how it’s opened doors, upped PR and brought a bunch of traffic.

  6. Andreas says:

Great links are links within content that relates to the link target page and reside on a page that is updated frequently, for example with blog comments.

  13. symfony says:

Some seo specialists claim that page authority and all other things concerning the page (like PR and DA) are of no importance for links. But I have noticed that links from sites with high PR are more valuable for Google.

  14. Rajesh Patel says:

I think link building really helps in measuring link quality.

  15. Nishadha says:

I think the ranking factors are changing often now with tweaks introduced everyday. Links alone would make you look suspicious now, you need tweets, facebook likes and blog comments etc all together to rank well now.

  16. Corey says:

I agree with you. Google is putting a more social and personalized emphasis on search results. But, links are still valuable.

  17. Roy C.Chukwu says:

This is bountiful for those who are more interested in Google PR.

I just decided never to bother about that but rather pay better attention to build good blogs with quality content.

If I have needed content on my blog the search engines will pick it and people will never stop coming to my blogsite. Also, this will result to be people linking, liking, joining and sharing my blog pages.

    • Corey says:

That is a Pure SEO strategy and one that absolutely works. Great content should always come first 🙂

    • Jesse Oguns says:

Although I am new into the ‘Blogosphere’, I agree with your style. I think if you play the link rule, Google will always change their rule. We can’t help that.

So many poor blogs in terms of content can play good SEO and rank well. Build good readers relationship and your growth will come.

      • Roy C.Chukwu says:

That is right. No need looking for any magic. Just go ahead with great content, google and the people will give you links even when you never ask for them 🙂

  18. Valentine Belonwu says:

    Hi Corey,
Link building with quality links is like any other SEO practice. Link building takes time and careful and thoughtful effort.

by the way, looks like this site stole this content, check it out

Yeah. The site has been doing it for sometime now – I’ll try to get the fellow to stop copying my articles.

Thanks a lot for the notification bro!

      • Jesse Oguns says:

Why would someone do such a thing? What is the implication of having same content published on different blogs?

        • Onibalusi says:

I have contacted the fellow and he has apologized – I believe he will stop copying my articles but I will be keeping tabs. It is just funny how people can behave sometimes.

    • Roy C.Chukwu says:

By the way how did you discover this? I will like to know as they many be other bloggers doing just the something.

  19. Dipendra-Hack Facebook says:

  21. That’s some great point. But there should been another option for dmoz listed. Dmoz listed domain links get better result.

  22. Joseph Adediji says:

Thanks for sharing this. @ Cristian, Alexa rankings is not reliable because they depend on their toolbar, if you have many Visitors with Alexa bar installed on their browser you will get higher rankings with Alexa.

  23. If you’re about to build inbound links then you should use of a site where it has a high page rank because Google trusts sites that have a high page rank thus they will also find yours a credible one.

  24. sibin says:

I only consider the PageRank as a main factor to measure link quality because other factors like Domain Authority and Page Authority finally contribute to the overall Page Rank.

  27. I have found that the best links are the ones that come from relevant pages that are relevant to your sites content – and yeah, pagerank too…. 😉
