5 Things to Consider Before Trying to Build Traffic To Your Blog

consider before trafficOne thing most bloggers want to know is getting traffic to their blogs but unfortunately, many of them will get this traffic and will be in the same mood they were because they don’t know how to maintain it.
Getting traffic to a blog is not what is most important because the traffic itself is useless but what is important is how you use that traffic, I mean, how you utilize it for your future benefits.
There are some things to consider before trying to get traffic to your blog and this post will be detailing some of them.
The methods in this post are applicable to every niche and any type of quality traffic.

1. Have a Neat Design and Easy Navigation: One of the most important things to consider before getting traffic to your blog at all is the design, if your blog looks horrible then people will despise it at their first site and it will be irritating to try and read your content.
I went through this problem in my early days of blogging; I kept on changing theme until I find the one which is right for me. When in a problem like this, one thing you should consider and ask yourself is “Is this design looking good?”, you might be bias, but if you observe your design and you discover that you are growing tired of your design or it is looking too old then you are most probably not having the right design.
A website design should not be analyzed within a short period of time (because when I was still using some ugly themes on my blog, I found them okay at first but after some days I began to dislike them), but should be analyzed over time. You should also try as much as possible to see how your content will look in different browsers and different screen resolutions because this helps you maximize the traffic you will get.

2. Have Great Content: One thing I noticed among many bloggers with average content is that it becomes difficult for them to grow, their blog’s growth strongly relies on their work (and this is not good).
Having great content for your blog is one very important thing that can determine how traffic will be on your blog. One person that has used this key to his advantage is Glen Allsopp from Viperchill, he keeps on writing great, high-quality content over time and the result is that people keep promoting his blog for him even when he is sleeping.

One great thing I discovered from my blog is that you can succeed and skyrocket your blog to the next level even with as low as hundred visitors a day if you know how to make use of writing great content to your advantage.
I do observe some of my posts and the one that is really great has done a lot to help me improve my daily traffic.

Another great thing about writing great content is that quantity doesn’t matter, quality is what matters. If you write high quality articles once in a week then it is far better than writing just any type of article everyday.
You might also want to control yourself; for example, if you are too busy to write high quality articles everyday then you might want to change your posting schedule to twice a week thereby making sure you only put out great content.

3. Have a Backup Option: One of the best ways to make effective use of your traffic is by having a backup option.
For example, my major backup option is my mailing list and I discovered that anytime I send a mail to my list about a blog post of mine I will always see a difference in that post, I noticed with time that a lot of people on my list so much respect me and they are more active, they share my posts and they even comment than regular visitors to my blog.
I also discovered that the majority of people on my list only visited my blog once but due to me getting in touch over time they became loyal readers.

Your backup might be in form of your RSS feed, it might be your mailing list but what matters most is having a backup plan, and not just any backup plan but a solid one.
A great reason you should have a backup plan is that anything can happen at anytime, for example, your blog can be hacked, you might face one problem e.g. sickness (God forbid) that might prevent you from blogging for a long time but having a backup plan helps you overcome that problem with ease because no matter how long your blog is left un-updated your readers will still receive your posts.
You don’t need to wait to reach a certain traffic number before you begin to have a backup, you can start right away because the earlier you start, the better it gets.

4. Keep Sustaining the Traffic: This is one major problem with many people, they will have a lot of traffic but their major problem is that they can’t sustain it. One major thing to consider when trying to get traffic to your blog is how you will sustain it, if you worked hard to get traffic to your blog and you fail to take care of your blog then in a short period of time your traffic will be deteriorating and everything will be like it was when you started.
One great way to sustain the traffic to your blog is by updating your blog frequently, your readers love fresh content (especially if you provide great one) and there is no point wanting lots of traffic if you are not updating your blog frequently.

5. Focus on What Matters: Another important thing when trying to get traffic to your blog is that you should focus on what matters most, some people only focus on social media traffic and at the end when the traffic dies they will be in a dejected mode. I am not against social media traffic, and it is really good! What I am trying to say is that any type of traffic you get should revolve around some important traffic generation methods, for example, if you get most of your traffic from social bookmarking sites, you might want to leverage the traffic to your SEO benefits and also try to get people subscribed to your blog – having long-term traffic generating streams is what matters most and you should work hard on this!

Many people jump on the bandwagon of I want more traffic, they keep working harder day in day out only to discover ay last that their traffic generating efforts is a waste, focus on the tips above, do them first before trying to get traffic and you will be happy with the results you get on the long run.

Onibalusi. I could not agree more with your article. Getting and maintaining traffic to a blog requires consistent effort, creativity and a willingness to share your expertise, knowledge, insights, etc.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Exactly Scott,

Many people think getting traffic is only what you need. Getting traffic is only half of the game ;), maintaining it is even more important!

  3. Hi Onibalusi! After following your blog for some times, i’m trying to build up my mailing list now for my blog. I can see your effort on building your mailing list. I will seek for your advice if i have any problem with it. Thanks a lot!

    Hey Oni,

    Awesome article dude!

Sometimes I don’t like to read longer articles, because I tend to loose focus. You teach me that you can still write long articles and keep your readers into them if you write quality content.

I believe you when you say it’s better to write 2 quality packed articles a week, rather than to write 5 average article a week. Your community and followers will get used to your posting schedule so, posting awesome article will benefit you much more.

These tips are something many bloggers should take a hard look at before they start killing themselves about getting tons of traffic. Like you said.. What’s the use of all that traffic if you can keep them coming back for more. One time visitors are not what you want.

On another note, having a back up plan is very important, because you never know what may happen to your or your blog. Everything could change in a moments notice.

Thanks you for a great source of information.

    God bless,
    William Veasley

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Hi William,

I am happy this post could help and beat your expectation 🙂

Yeah, you are absolutely right. One of the most important things is having a backup plan because sometimes things might not work out as you want but having a backup plan makes everything work out great!

Thanks for sharing this Oni. You’ve covered all the important details about driving traffic to a blog.

I agree with keep on writing great content. Even if you’re just beginning to blog, if you always write great content, then people will start to notice you and eventually improve your traffic.

I also agree with having a mailing list while blogging. A lot of people don’t build their list and just be contented on the number of readers that they have. What they don’t know is a reader is different from a subscriber.

The advantage of having a mailing list is it can give you instant traffic. When you have a new post, you can email your subscribers about your new post and have an instant traffic to your blog.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Exactly Gary,

Writing great content always is one of the most important things to consider.

My mailing list also is doing wonders, it converts better than any other medium I have ever seen.

  8. Ben Lang says:

Agree 100% with all of these.

Without them you wouldn’t get a good amount of traffic.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Sure Ben,

      You are absolutely right here!

  9. Tinh says:

Number #1 and #2 rocks, that is why I spent hundred USD for my design 🙂 Thanks for great article Bami

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Great Tinh,

I am glad you enjoyed the post 🙂

      Thanks a lot!

  10. Another great post Onibalusi! Thanks for sharing I agree that fresh articles that are interesting to your readers can maintain your traffic manageable.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Great Jeff,

Getting traffic to a blog is one stpe, maintaining it is another.

I am glad you loved it 🙂

  11. Sourav says:

Had to agree on all the points with you. Content quality is the most important thing to make the reader interested in your blog. And then the rest follows. For sustaining the traffic, we also need to stay focused on the topic of our blog and not start blogging on something else.

  12. Container Gardening says:

Don’t forget to give your viewers benefits like coupons, discounts and freebies. People will like you for giving them something for free and that will give you the edge you want in the future.

    Best regards,

  13. Mani Viswanathan says:

All the points are pretty vital & should be implemented by every blogger

  14. Wayne Howard says:

Pretty good post. I may include this in The Blogger’s Atlas, a super guide I am putting together.

Luckily, I think I have all those bases covered. Open the floodgates! LOL

  15. Excellent points bro.

Point 1 and 2 are excellent, because it helps you get repeat traffic. At times, we forget that we don’t just need to bring new people to the site, we also need to keep them and make them come back. This can happen when you have quality design and quality content. Nice sharing.

    • Exactly Shaukat,

Keeping people coming is also as important as getting them in the first time.

      Tahnks so much for commenting,
      -Onibalusi

  16. polywood says:

From all these points , the most important one is the design and out look of the blog as non technical people only consider the beauty not the technical aspects but other four points are related to the technical view.

  17. Investing in UK says:

I love the way you have written the whole article. Your ideas are innovative and i find lot of new things here which i did not get any other. Thanks for this article i will regularly come back to your blog to find something new.
