My Blog Suspended For Hours – What a sad event

March 12 was a very sad day for me, a very sad one indeed. Why? If you all know me, you will know I am a blog addict and there is nothing I love as my blog.

I wrote over 40 guest posts in march and over 120 this year, just because of my blog.

On the 12th of March, 2010, I woke up to access my blog, just to see a message telling me my blog has been suspended.

What Happened? I don’t know, because my hosting payment will expire on the 7th of June, 2010.

My Host is one of the most Reliable Host I have ever seen (I use Secure Signup), they are very reliable. I never had problem with them. They have helped me install scripts that others would otherwise charge hundreds of dollars for completely free. They are dedicated to their work and have one of the best customer support I have ever seen (offline and online).

What now happened?

If you have been a reader of my blog for quite sometime, you will have noticed me talking about my autoblog once or twice.

An autoblog is a blog where you will install a script that will be crawling news site and articles directories for articles to post on the blog (at least, that is what WP Robot does, and it is what I use).

I started my autoblog last month and within a month, the blog is already getting 100’s of visitors per day. I saw the potential in this site so I began adding more keywords to the autoblogging software. I also added my Adsense code to it on the 11th of may.

After contacting my host to know what the problem was, they told me it was my autoblog that was using too much of server resources and that it affected other users; which made 5 users to cancel their accounts immediately.

I initially didn’t know that was the problem and it was also unfortunate that their support took hours on this day instead of the normal minutes it do take.

I told them I was sorry and the blog got reinstated on the condition that I prevent the problem from happening again.

In a nutshell…

The problem was caused by my autoblog.

Pls, do not get me wrong… This blog is not an autoblog, I only share valuable tips from my heart and experiences.

My autoblog is another blog called techandtips.com (now removed).

I was initially not happy and i told my host that May 12 is the most sorrowful day of my life, they also told me they could not help, that they also lost 5 users as a result of my action. I was so sorry, and I am still very sorry.

If for any reason, my host or any of their agents are reading this post, I am expressing my apology publicly and I am telling the public (and you; my host), I am very sorry for what I did. I know you as a good host and you also know me as a good customer, so I believe we both understand each other.

To You…

Many of my readers also experience this problem because they couldn’t get access to one of the best blogs on earth (mine of course :)) for a very long period of time. I was contacted by some people who knew my email address and I also got messages from others after the site was life.

My Advice and Lesson…

Do not host an autoblog on a shared server, only do it on a dedicated server.

It really feels bad when you see that hosting account suspended message and trust me bro “Secure Signup”, who you are saying to be reliable is completely wrong..Believe it or not, I have never heard about it and I think nor anyone else would have heard about it who will be commenting below me. It’s just another web host out of Thousands!! Anyone can start their own hosting company simply by taking some reseller hosting and grabbing a script to sell that hosting.

After doing some little Googling, I came to know that “Secure Signup” is a part of “ByetHost”..and again, “ByetHost” is seriously “just another hosting company”.

Seriously, Move On! Otherwise I think you will face big trouble as your blog growth grows which I see happening very soon. Try moving over to HostGator or some other big hosting companies.

And by the way your last statement “Do not host an autoblog on a shared server, only do it on a dedicated server. ” is really funny..I don’t think that someone looking to start an autoblog would buy a “Dedicated Server”..Naah, I really don’t think..Autoblogs are usually started by those who can only afford shared hosting..and in fact even if they can afford “Dedicated Server”, I don’t think it’s worth the investment..

        Hi Typhoon,

        Yeah! It is very funny!

The reason I said it is that my autoblog started getting hundreds of unique visitors in less than 2 months, without any promotion. Someone who is already making money online might want to give it a trial.

        I got your point.

Thanks a lot for the nice comment,

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Hi Typhoon,

Yeah! Exactly. I was frustrated, I almost cried because my guest post went live on SiteSketch101 on that day.

Securesignup’s Alexa rank is 10,000, I have been using them since October 2009, that is why I said they are reliable.

I have enjoyed their relationship especially their customer support. They do reply tickets in less than one hour (an exception is may 12).

Let me see how things go for the main time.

Thanks a lot for your nice comment and your concern, I really appreciate it,
      -Onibalusi

      • Typhoon says:

Well, you can’t judge reliability of a website by looking its Alexa rank. Alexa rank itself isn’t reliable..Also, one can manipulate alexa rank with certain tricks..So, in future don’t judge any website with such kind of ranking or something..Always look for a dozen of in-depth reviews and then only choose that service.

          Hi Typhoon,

You have a right point here, I will embark on great reviews to find out if there is any negatives about them.

That was very nice to do that research for Onibalusi… and there seems to be a lot of hosting companies that are owned by Company “X” that always present themselves spectacularly, only to find out that they are like you said “just another hosting company” or in many cases even worse–an unreliable hosting company..

I had a similar experience. I was using HostClear (which I had noticed at some point to be completely identical to JustHost). I thought it was a great service and they offered everything at such a low price. Then I read online that they are owned by an other company who runs three identical hosting services and that the company has an EXTREMELY bad reputation for shutting down websites with no warning and forcing their customers to upgrade to a dedicated plan when traffic was rising, but not to the point to be able to afford their dedicated solutions.

Once I heard about that, I switched to HostGator, who I’ve used in the past (and also has some very good rates for the VPS plans).

Ya, JustHost really has a bad reputation..I wonder how come they are ranked at top positions at various web hosting rating websites..They must be bribing them..:)

  4. Spyros says:

I know the feeling, i had a suspended blog in the past due to resource usage.

However, just a small advice there. It is not really a good idea to create duplicate content websites, especially if you use Adsense on them. Sooner or later this might lead to your account being banned, so please beware. Google punishes this kind of websites, you can read that in their policy as well.

Yeah! Concerning the autoblog, I will stop it totally and work hard on this blog, if my make money online, I will outsource blogs in other niches.

Thanks a lot for the nice comment,

  5. Jonathan Beebe says:

I remember I had JUST submitted my guest post for review right BEFORE that happened, and I remember you emailing me letting me know what was going on. I was really worried for you. I didn’t want your search rankings to go down because of a hosting problem, and I’m glad you got it ironed out relatively quickly.

Good thing you found out it was that autoblog! Perhaps you should have just removed the autoblog script, but kept the site up and posted semi-regular updates to keep the traffic somewhat flowing? I’m sure the rankings would go down some though.
.-= Jonathan Beebe´s last blog ..How to Supercharge Your Following =-.

    • Onibalusi Bamidele says:

      Hi Jonathan,

You are absolutely right. I was also happy it was resolved on that day. My blog is an authority in Google so before I can lose my rankings, it will mean my site must have been down for weeks.

Yeah! Concerning the autoblog, you are absolutely right. I just thought like that after it has been deleted, I was so frustrated, this blog is my main blog and it cannot be sacrificed for an autoblog – even though it is getting tens of thousands of visitors a day.

Thanks a lot for the nice comment,
      -Onibalusi

  6. I have tried Byethost and my experience was really bad with them.
Yeah, support is fast but their are many other things like cpu usage, downtime..etc etc. !
I think you should change your hosting to hostgator or bluehost.
To be honest, their free hosting is much better than premium one. even they don’t suspend free accounts lol 😀 !!

    Thanks,
    Dev

  7. I’m quite surprised to hear you had an autoblog that was gaining traffic without promotion. What tracker were you using to analyze the traffic: AWSTATS or GOOGLE ANALYTICS?

Please do know that autoblogs are frowned upon unless they leave a link back to the original author of the post. Anyway it’s a highly debated topic online

P.S: Google HATES autoblogs so be careful how you go about setting them up or you might lose in the end

      Hi Udegbunam,

I use Statpress and Google Analytics. AWSTATS was saying it is getting about 250 or so.

My autoblog was linking back to the authors and it only copies content from article directories and news websites, not from blogs.

I have decided to stop using autoblogs.

Thanks a lot for the nice comment,

  9. CJ says:

That would absolutely suck! I’ve never had any of my sites suspended due to overuse of resources, but I guess if I ever did, I would just upgrade to an unlimited data plan.

I’ve never tried an autoblog before, but based on what you’re saying, I don’t think I ever will either! Haha

    Cool post man

  11. From experience as a hosting support, lots of customers use to install one script or other on there site, which may cause problem to the server and other customers. Once a customer know that the problem is from the server, the next think is to transfer is domain name and hosting package away.

      Hi,

Glad to hear your opinion as an hosting support.

I don’t scrape content from blogs, just from article sites and news sites.

    Hi there
This is a great post!! I use autoblogging to start a bolg and see if it is going to be a good one…then I turn auto blogging off and start investing time in it…

I am hosted with hostgator and have not had a problem yet, however it is very nice to know what could possibily happen.

Another thing is that I only ever set autoblogging to one post every two days…I try to make it look like a natural developing website.
