5 Very Important Blogging Lessons You Can Learn from Listening to Eminem

This is a guest post by Brandon Yanofsky.

“I am who I am and I say what I think. I’m not putting a face on for the record.” -Eminem

Whether you love or hate his music, you have to admit: Eminem knows how to truly connect with his audience. Just look at the numbers of diehard fans who still follow him.

It’s any blogger’s dream.

But what does Eminem do that allows him to create such a great audience? And how can we, as bloggers, use it to improve our blogging?

1. Speak Your Mind…Don’t Censor Yourself

Like the opening quote says, Eminem does not censor himself. He tells everyone what he thinks. That kind of honesty and transparency resonates with his audience.

As a blogger, you should be just as open and honest. Let your true feelings shine through. A great example of a blogger doing just that is Penelope Trunk, who has no problem talking about her thoughts on sex or her asperger’s syndrome. Or even Naomi Dunford who has no problem dropping an F-bomb here and there.

2. Be Human

Most business bloggers only talk about the positives in their business. They’ll talk all day about every success, but never about mistakes. That’s just not human. And your readers can’t resonate with someone who isn’t human.

Eminem, on the other hand, isn’t afraid to talk about both the good and bad in his life. He has no problem talking about his drug addiction. He has no problem admitting one of his albums sucked (Copyblogger wrote a great article on this). And he has no problem talking about abuse in his past. He doesn’t pretend to be perfect; people love him for it.

Show your readers that you are human. Don’t be afraid to talk about negatives as much as you talk about positives.

3. Mix it Up

You never really know what Eminem will throw at you. It might be a humorous song making fun of Jessica Simpson called “We Made You”, or a deep, introspective song called “Stan”, or maybe his more gangster rap lyrics as in “Forgot About Dre.”

In the same way, mix up the tones of your blog posts. If you write a lot of comedic posts, get serious once in a while. If you’re always informal, be formal. This allows your readers to see all sides of you.

4. Work With Others

Eminem is constantly crossing barriers and working with different artists. At the Grammys a few years back, he sang on stage with Elton John. More recently, he’s worked with pop singers Rihanna and Pink. When he creates or performs a song with these performers, a new audience is exposed to Eminem.

Guest blogging is the same things for bloggers. Every time you write an article for someone else’s blog, their audience is exposed to you. And like Eminem, you gain a whole new following.

5. Some People Will Love You, Others Hate You

Eminem is one of the most controversial music artists of all time. Some say he is a true poet, that his words are inspirational, and that he may be the greatest artist of all time. Some call him misogynistic, a bigot, and promoter of violence.

In other words: he has haters, just as he has lovers.

When you begin blogging and putting your thoughts out there, you too will inevitably have both. Some people will love what you write, and others will hate it.

Don’t let the haters discourage you. Just because someone “disses” you doesn’t mean you should stop.

Now, go put some Eminem songs on your iPod and let your thoughts start flowing. Take these tips and write some of the best blog articles you’ve ever written.

    Hi, Brandon !

really nice and different kind of write up you’ve here.

Eminem = blogging, but the combination of writing is good though..

    thanks

  6. Andreas says:

Eminem also said “My Name Is”. It is important that the visitor can clearly identify you and your brand on your website as well as a visible link to your about me or us page.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

Yes. Good point. Like I know I’m speaking to you, Andreas, but it can be difficult to know who I’m speaking to when it’s just a brand name.

  7. sokun says:

I love Eminem. I also think you can learn from him that you need to have a good reason to blog, such as it’s enjoyable otherwise you won’t be motivated.

  8. Joanna says:

I’m a conservative housewife now, but I grew up listening to Eminem, and you’re so right! Love him or hate him, he’s one guy that everyone knows of, and everyone has something to say about.

That’s what makes an artist, brand, or blogger not only memorable, but a household name.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

      Hey Joanna,

Love your description of yourself: conservative housewife who grew up listening to Eminem.

And very true. The most loved bands, brands, and bloggers are the most hated as well.

  9. sibin says:

That’s true.People tell about there success stories. But some people tell about there failure.Big films shows only there good side..

  10. Navneet Arora says:

The poin for guest post is right but i really find it so difficult to guest post,I think only full time bloggers can do this….

  11. Caraffa Filtrante says:

“5. Some People Will Love You, Others Hate You”, right mate, that’s a whole truth.

  12. Edgar says:

It’s very hard to replicate such a success, but it ‘s still possible to do. Speaking your mind and being natural is definitely the key to reach your loyal audience.

  13. Ryan Biddulph says:

    Hi Brandon,

All great reasons. Working with others might be #1.

You achieve more by working with instead of against others. No need to compete. No need to go against anyone. Operate on a creative plane of thought, and you won’t compete against anybody.

The miracle of working together with other knowledgeable folks is this: you get to tap into their knowledge. When surrounded by inspiration, you become inspired. You pick up a creative idea and put your twist on it. Or you might revamp your marketing campaign based on a super little idea you picked up from one of your associates.

Thanks for sharing your insight Brandon.

    Ryan

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

      Thanks Ryan.

Basic Adam Smith: we can accomplish more together than individually.

  14. digital world says:

lol nice comparison:D i agree with all of it

  15. fazal mayar says:

nice comparison, solid points. As a blogger, you can do certain things that will make you successful such as networking

  16. Great! That’s what I call times and again ‘be creative and keep experimenting.’

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

Good point. Always have to keep experimenting.

  17. CFA says:

Eminem is pretty good at what he does and you have pointed out the “positives” – a valuable lesson for us.

he’s the man and he could be a great blogger.

  19. susan says:

Cool! I have never thought that Eminem can be so nice when we speak about promotion. The idea that I like today is be human. This is the most important and this is to attract lots of people if they see you are the same as they.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

      Very true Susan

  20. deji says:

i admire eminem and his musics he is a great artiste! nice one

  21. Good point! My personal favorite is number 2. Be Human. I recently saw a video on business talking about this, in a general sense, there’s a concept that they call “mesh”. This basically talks about sharing and that includes sharing our mistakes thus allowing others to learn from them.

Thanks for the useful insight, Brandon!

    Cheers,
    Floricel

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

      Thanks Florice,

Being human is so important. The writers I read are always the ones who tell me about the good and bad. When someone just talks about the good, I don’t believe anything they say.

  22. Akash Vedi says:

Oh man i really liked the post .Thanks a lot for the post.
i am an Eminem follower..\m/ i would try to improve my writing 🙂

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

If you ever need inspiration, just throw on an Eminem album.

  23. This tips are super. I’ve been a fan of Eminem for long and i can tell you his flows are natural.

  24. Ferhat says:

It’s a good idea 🙂 I need to try this right now 🙂

  25. TsarShu says:

You never know you can teach you. I am not a big fan of Eminem and I don’t listen to his songs. I am surprised that his songs can be so deep and up to life. As for me speak your mind is what really crucial for a person.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

Eminem is very deep. But I think he speaks to a specific type of person, someone who has gone through what he has gone to. So not everyone may appreciate it (which is fine), but the few who do appreciate it, pretty much fill their lives with his words.

  26. Java Nature says:

sometimes there are some songs that we can make in life inspiration …

  27. Terje Sannarnes says:

Very creative blog post, indeed. Some bloggers and online entrepreneurs even don’t expect that they can benefit from listining Eminem.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

I usually listen to Eminem while I write my blog posts. I was actually listening to him while I wrote this blog post.

  28. Garden Improvement says:

Great tips! Though I’m not a big fan of Eminem, I’d like to say it’s pretty general. It really depends on someone preferences. So, I guess any music would do as long as it will motivate and inspire you in any aspects of life.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

I don’t know how much Miley Cyrus applies here though. She’s not really speaking her mind.

  29. Kenny says:

Even though I am not a big fan of Eminem,I do like his honesty. Thanks for sharing.

    • Onibalusi says:

I’m also not a fan (I hardly listen to music) but this post is epic!

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

Listen to Eminem again. Maybe you’ll have a new appreciation for his music 🙂

  30. Danielle @ Instant Affiliate Paydays says:

This is a really thought provoking post. I would have never made a connection between Eminem and blogging! But it’s true. I especially relate to the point about showing your mistakes and being a human. It’s refreshing to read a blog and get both sides of the story. Authentic writing will always get you further in my opinion.

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

I’m all about authentic writing. I think it’s really the only thing that makes you different than anyone else

  31. Atlanta Injury Attorney says:

Wow! i was not aware that eminem is so intelligent for this.Nice style of blogging

    • Brandon Yanofsky says:

Eminem is actually a pretty smart guy. It takes a large amount of intelligence to do what he has done.

  32. Lexmark toner cartridges says:

This is my first time to read a blog post that correlates music to blogging. So Nice.
