Why So Many People Fail In Affiliate Marketing And How You Can EASILY Overcome It

affiliate marketing failure - how to overcome itThis is a guest post by Sushant Risodkar.

Are you discouraged because you hear about so many people failing at Affiliate marketing?

It’s understandable to believe you don’t stand a chance in affiliate marketing when you constantly hear of everyone else failing. But failure can easily be avoided when you know the proper way to go about things.

In this article we are going to discuss a few ways you can avoid failure, such as the importance of testing out a given program you are trying to promote, the power of adapting a powerful strategy, and the importance of creating a well-thought-out plan.

affiliate marketing

No matter how good you think a given product is, or how high the commission for a given product might be, if you don’t test out different offers first, it is going to be hard for you to be successful. Testing out offers is very simple; all you have to do is use a strategy known as split testing. Split testing requires you put different variations of the same product or a different product in the same niche in front of the same audience.

Your goal is to see which offer will convert the most, and once you are able to see this you can decide to put more of your efforts into promoting that particular offer. This is going to have a lot of benefits, such as getting you the highest rate of return for your investment. You can also pound a given offer into the ground before you decide to move onto the next.

Split testing allows you to know what’s working and what’s not working so you don’t waste money on unlucrative endeavors. It may also be a good idea to do a little bit of research for a given program or product before you even think about promoting it.

If you hope to be successful with affiliate marketing, then one of the most important things you need to do is figure out a strategy and then stick with it.

You want to stick with a strategy before you decide to move onto something else. Many people fail at affiliate marketing because they get discouraged when one strategy doesn’t pull in the results they hoped for. Usually these people may have unrealistic expectations, and when those unrealistic expectations aren’t met they throw in the towel. All of this can be easily avoided when you make the commitment to stick to one method.

After you have given any method an honest try and you are not satisfied with the results, then you can decide to move on. Even with all this being said, I would say it is better to have any kind of strategy than to not have a strategy at all. Affiliate marketing can be very competitive at times, and going in with a battle plan will definitely help you on the long run. If you hope to avoid failure, develop or learn a strategy now and commit to it.

Once you have adopted an effective strategy for your affiliate marketing efforts, this will not be enough. Having an effective strategy simply means knowing what you want to do, but it doesn’t mean knowing how you are going to do it. A lot of would-be Affiliate marketers fail because they don’t even know how to get started. Being able to map out the appropriate action steps you need to take right now is very important. In order to do this I would recommend you keep some sort of written plan, whether it be on your computer or on paper of what needs to be done first.

Drawing out several action steps and then taking action on them is what will contribute to your success. Whenever you feel like an improvement can be made to a given step, you can do this. But you would not make the mistake that so many Affiliate marketers make and constantly search for a better way before you even get started. You will take action first and then make adjustments as you go along. When you do it this way it is a much better approach, and you will gain a lot of hands-on experience.

Time To End This

If you hope to put yourself in the tiny minority of affiliate marketers that succeed, being able to split test your offers, being able to stick to a proven strategy, and creating a well laid out action plan can definitely put you there. All of this is going to require a little bit of research and dedication on your part.

Do let me know your thoughts on this post. I am eagerly waiting to find out how YOUR affiliate marketing plans and progress is going on right now… Are you facing any problem/failure of any kind or you are climbing the success stairs with every passing day? Also, how much percentage of your monthly income, is all because of affiliate marketing (approximation is enough) ?

    • Thanks Adesoji…Are your affiliate earnings playing major part in your online income?

  1. There are many people who are induldge in affiliate marketing and to be successful you should have good strategy. Important thing here is you need to give proper and enough time to a particular strategy before deciding whether it’s working or not. You can’t see result from any strategy within 2 days.

    • Hi Riya looks like you are from India and your website appears to be earning great amount of affiliate earnings πŸ™‚

Spending good amount of time on a particular strategy to decide on its effectiveness is really important.

What I find with most newbies out there that they try a method say “article marketing” for a week; since its hard to see any results so quick (most of the time); they jump to another marketing strategy immediately. That’s an absolutely wrong approach.

      Thanks for commenting riya.

People fail in affiliate programmes because they don’t have enough experience and they don’t want to get some advice when they need it. When you start such a programme you should have a very good picture of your every step and know what to do in every situation.

    • Experience always builds up slowly by trying methods yourself and giving some time to that method to show you the result. And I agree to you on the fact that these days people prefer more like a push-button solution rather than considering mentoring/consultation from an experienced person in this field who can guide and advice you properly so that you don’t get lost in this jungle.

      Thanks for commenting susan.

  3. Missy @ Interact Projects says:

I think one thing that makes people fail in affiliate marketing is the lack of motivation and interest. All they think about is that they can make money online. But every successful affiliate marketer worked hard to earn what they’ve got right now. They have to learn how everything works first before they can be successful.

    • You are just on the spot Missy. People loose interest immediately when they don’t see any money in their clickbank or other affiliate program account in just few days. Everyone wants quick money. Many times I face people on chat or through email who say “how you make money with this n that because I tried this but see no money, I want to make money right now”…That’s where newbies fail.

      Thanks for commenting Missy.

  4. Hi Sushant,

    Your advice is spot on.

Many fail because they don’t test enough to discern what works, or even worse, they stop doing what works.

The never-ending quest for the “perfect system” causes many to abandon successful strategies. They fail to stick with a proven strategy and the end result is affiliate failure.

When something works, stick with it.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • If you are closely following the IM niche, that’s what happening there. People rush to buy a NEWLY launched make money online course/software, try it for 2 days and then they go to another Newly launched product because it has more lucrative sales page..They don’t stick or try anything properly.

This cool comic from Jared, clearly defines that stage: http://www.cliconomics.com/how-to-suck-at-internet-marketing/

      Thanks for commenting Ryan.

  5. Tom says:

This reminds me of the Coke versus Pepsi commericals. Which drink was better. I remember the commercials testing the two drinks and one or the other would be declared the winner.

The same can be said for affiliate marketing.

I just started my campaign but getting ready to “talk” about it more.

    Great post,

    • Yeah, even I saw that a long time back. πŸ˜€ One should at least test out a campaign for a week to month depending on what kind of marketing method you have adapted for that particular product. I am sure you will see good results tom because you are on the right track.

      Thanks for commenting Tom.

  6. Mohamed Idris says:

When I was developing my plan, it all worked out really well (picking a product, building a website, etc.)

My problem was building backlinks. I needed a few hundered backlinks for my niche, but I only have about 60-70 backlinks.

The problem was that I didn’t have a proper backlinking strategy in my initial plan.

    • Esha Putra says:

you can do your link building in many ways….
there are one way, two way, etc…
      just google it..

    • If you are constructing an affiliate marketing plan which requires you to build a website to promote a product then you MUST have a proper backlinking strategy.

These days, “I” find building backlinks a pretty easy thing to do. Almost everything is open these days on web…the strategies and all that. So just pick one good method and start building backlinks for your affiliate site.

Thanks Mohamed for commenting and letting us know the problem you had earlier.

  7. Anna says:

My opinion is that most people fail in affiliate marketing just because they lose confidence in themselves very quickly and as soon as they face problems they stop their efforts.

    • Yes you are right. And this is not just about affiliate marketing.

People lose confidence in almost every field when they don’t see the thing happening for them in a positive way…And that’s the reason why so many bloggers and even affiliate marketers give up too early because they see no money coming their way after doing some efforts without even giving a thought of reevaluating their strategies which might be going wrong.

      Thanks for your comment Anna.

  8. good post sushant, i think affiliate marketing isnt that easy if you dont know what you are doing!

    • Thanks fazal for your comment. You are true with that statement.

  9. Hey Shushant! Great post man!

More than anything I believe in writing things down on paper (there’s something about putting pen or pen to paper and mapping out your thoughts) and then taking action upon them.

I’ve always said that you can attend all the seminars, all the development workshops, all the mastermind groups and all the blogging conferences you want but if at the end of the day you fail to take action all, all of what you have leaned will have gone to waste.

    • Fisayo says:

I love your position about good old pen and paper. I’m able to think my ideas through when I brainstorm that way.

Secondly, action is just too important. Even when you are on the wrong path. At some point(if you don’t quit) you’ll see the light and have your experience (your failures) as guide.

    • You are spot-on hector. People don’t take ACTION when they have been told something. They just assume it from beginning that it will not work for them or feel very lazy to give it a try.

Everyone wants a “push button” solution which in 3 clicks and 1min. 23sec will send them avalanche of cash. Many recent IM product launches have stuffed these newbies brain with such “push button” headings that has made them unresponsive to real teaching material and strategies that works for almost everyone.

      Thanks for your comment hector.

Hi Sushant, I am a new blogger searching for effective strategies for the success. I am promoting some affiliate products but not followed any specific strategy so far. Thanks for the valuable content.

    • I hope you are now going to have a proper strategy for your affiliate marketing campaigns. Thanks for commenting Pratap!

  11. Adaptability and effective strategy in the affiliate marketing means knowing what to do; that is having a strategy to get started. I agree that actions should be for appropriate goals to take is very important. Thanks for posting this.

  12. Nikenya Domain Names says:

I agree that most people fail in affiliate marketing perhaps because most of them are impatient. They want to make quick money within a short period of time. Making a bad choice of affiliate program leads to failure, good of you to have mentioned about split testing.

Any person who wants to venture into affiliate marketing should learn the strategies to use, should plan well and know how to build an affiliate marketing website. Providing quality information should be the first objective before telling people to buy the affiliate products/services.

  13. David Guion says:

Article marketing is but one way of backlinking, and building backlinks takes time–and patience. I’m currently trying to develop a plan for building an email list to take advantage of whatever juice I get from my still-young backlinking campaign.

  14. I have tried affiliate marketing years ago with a partner but we failed. I guess its normal to fail in the beginning. What’s important is we learn from it and start once again until we succeed. πŸ™‚

  15. I’m just getting ready to dip my toes into affiliate marketing. Thanks for the tips!

  16. Tony Rehor says:

I agree that to make any kind of living in Internet Marketing you can never say never and you must believe in yourself.

  17. mike says:

thanks for this post. I seem to struggle with having a solid plan myself. I’m still new to aff marketing but i’m learning it day by day.

  18. Canon laser toner cartridges says:

It is really hard to succeed in affiliate marketing. It is so frustrating that you do all the work but still cannot make a single sale.

  19. Oliver says:

They are good tips. I think that, given that the commissions are obviously significantly lower than the margin the providers make, it’s important to find a niche with lower competition and good levels of traffic.

  20. Fisayo says:

For me, affiliate marketers fail (and always will) if they don’t have a list. You can never make enough by sprinkling some affiliate links on web pages. You need a (huge) list of loyal followers to mail your affiliate offers. Put together good deals and reasons that’ll make your subscribers kinda compelled to see your affiliate offers.

That’s the strategy top dog affiliates use.

I think all affiliate marketing strategy should include how to build a (huge) list.

  21. Hi Sushant,

Affiliate marketing is not very easy. It takes a lot of research and a lot of experimentation as well. I recently wrote an article about how to select and what to look for before joining any affiliate program. The link can be found on my name. I hope that will help a lot of newbies.

  22. I think that, you are expert in affiliate marketing. Nice guide. Thank you for sharing this useful information.

  23. Hi Sushant,

You are making 3 excellent points here. Split testing, having an effective strategy, and taking the right steps are all key to succeeding in affiliate marketing.

  24. Rune says:

Very good insight. This will serve as a lesson learned. Sometimes it really hard to figure out why things happen in such way , But we should try to look at the brighter side. Things happen for a reason.

  25. Ron says:

    Hi Sushant
I have been toying with the idea of adding an affiliate program to my site. Do you have any recommendations on a good affiliate tracking software? Thanks!

  26. Form an LLC says:

Great Post! We should always put in mind that all this strategies will be effective if we are to apply one basic rule. That is our “patience”. Affiliate marketing is combination of strategies and patience.

  27. Well affiliate marketing is very good source of bloggers and internet marketers. I must say I’m beginner of affiliate marketing. And your tips definitely helps me.

    Thanks for the update!

  28. Happy to help you πŸ™‚ Thanks for your comment.
