How To Become a Successful Affiliate Marketer

affiliate marketingThis is a guest post by DB Baker.

Affiliate marketing is probably the most common “make money online” method people take when they are looking to start their own online business.

Although it is very possible to make a full time living with affiliate marketing it is commonly known that 95% of affiliates don’t make it and give up shortly after getting started.

In this article I would like to explain about affiliate marketing and what are the reasons that make it so appealing. But I will mostly focus on showing you the steps you will need to do in order to be among the successful 5% of affiliates and how you can become a truly successful affiliate marketer and build a long lasting online business.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

If I need to sum affiliate marketing into one sentence than I guess this would be it:

You send traffic to an offer via your affiliate link and if they go on and buy you will earn a commission.

Affiliate marketing is what I consider a win win situation as both you, as the affiliate and the product creator, aka, the vendor, makes money.

By having an affiliate program, the vendors are actually being able to showcase their product to a significantly higher number of potential buyers and even though they will not make 100% on every sale, it is still worth it for them as they make money they wouldn’t make if they didn’t use affiliates to promote their products.

I think the first company to use affiliate marketing was Amazon and they probably have the biggest affiliate program today. The only downside is that their commissions are relativity low (7%-15%) mainly because they are dealing with physical products so the profit margins are very small.

When it comes to digital products, the biggest affiliate network would have to be Clickbank. With digital products the commission are very high and go from 50% up to 75%.

Why Become an Affiliate?

Many claim that affiliate marketing is a great way to start an online business and I have to agree as I did myself. Here are the main benefits of affiliate marketing as I see them:

  • No Money – With affiliate marketing you can actually build an online business with very little money upfront and invest money as you grow and earn.
  • No Support – All Support tickets, questions and problems are handled by the vendor.
  • No Customers – You don’t have to deal with customers directly as the vendor will take care of that for you.
  • No Refunds – All Refunds are handled by the vendor.
  • No Product – You don’t need a product of your own and this makes it very easy to get started.

If You Truly Want To Become Successful

In order to truly be successful as an affiliate you will need to avoid doing mistakes that most affiliate do. These mistakes are very common and they are the main reason that 95% of affiliates fail to succeed and eventually give up.

Here are the most important things you need to do or not do (in my opinion) in order to become a successful affiliate marketer:

Build an Email List

You must build an email list from day one. The sooner you will start building your list the faster you will get success. I am sure you heard of the saying “the money is in the list”, right? Well, guess what – It’s TRUE!.

The money is in the list and in order to truly become a super affiliate you will need an email list.

Think About Your Subscribers

Many affiliates fail to understand that they should think about their subscribers and how they can help them instead of thinking about the commissions they will make. If you want long term success you need to focus on your subscribers and their problems and help them solve these problems.

If you do so, you will gain trust and build your reputation and when your subscribers trust you they are more likely to stay on your list and make you commissions.

Don’t Copy & Paste

Most affiliates are lazy. Very lazy. All they do is copy and paste email swipes and/or affiliate material from the product sales page and create their own copied review.

Don’t do that.

Be different and provide valuable content in your own words. Be unique as this is the only way you will stand out.

Offer Bonuses

There is no escape, if you want to succeed as an affiliate marketer and make sales you will need to offer a bonus for every product your promote. And when I say offer a bonus I don’t mean offer any PLR product you can find. You want to unique, remember?

You want to stand out and be different so you will need to work hard on creating your own bonuses and most importantly, the bonus must be related to the product you are promoting and add additional value to the buyer.

Don’t Promote Everything

Don’t promote every single product you encounter. As you may already know, most products are not worth mentioning and you shouldn’t promote hyped up products that don’t deliver. I am very happy to say that HYPE seems to be loosing its effectiveness and it is about time.

Don’t promote hyped up products that don’t even mention what the product is on the sales page. That is a clear newbie trap as I like to call it. Also, don’t promote products that claim to only have 300 copies available but actually sell thousands. It is so annoying for me to see such products that sell for $37, say that only 300 copies will be sold while offering $5000 for the top affiliate. Even if you suck at math you can see the numbers don’t add up, right?

Most importantly, don’t promote products created by marketers with bad reputation. Reputation is everything and once you lose it, it will be very hard to gain it back and always remember that your subscribers will only judge you according to your last promotion so one bad product you will promote can and might erase everything you built before.

Affiliate marketing is great and I personally love it as this is how I got started and I am glad to say that I am on the right track (at least I think so ).

DB – Building an email list is definitely a great strategy for building a long term successful affiliate marketing business. I think most people get intimidated by the thought of building a list and avoid doing it when they first get started with affiliate marketing.

Other than building an email list, I think offering bonuses is a great strategy as well because it will make potential buyers want to buy through your link only. The best thing about bonuses is that they are pretty easy to find, but you have to make sure the bonuses you offer will provide some kind of value to the potential customer. Great tips.

    • dbbaker says:

      Hi John,

I actually think that the problem with bonuses is that because they are so easy to find, people don’t take the time to actually create a really good bonus. Taking the time and making a truly unique bonus will go along way and will be worth it.

    Hey db baker,

    Thanks for the awesome post!

I am new to affiliate marketing and can’t wait too I feel I have enough traffic to really have a shot at making constant income. This was a very good post because it explained a lot as there are and always will be the lazy people who try to make it by doing the least they can.

    Thanks again!

    God bless,
    William Veasley

Hi William, I am sure you will be successful as you realized what many fail to understand.

Give more and you will eventually get more.

      • William Tha Great says:

        Hey db baker,

I love the last quote you just made. “Give more and you will eventually get more”.

That is a great statement because that is the truth. The more you put into anything the more you are going to get out of it. If you look at any professional sport athlete, they put in countless hours of work to get to where they are now.

Thanks again! Time to Retweet! ( :

    Awesome post Baker!
You are right bro. Most affiliate marketers are damn lazy, they just copy paste any link that have high commission. It’s good to build a list and don’t promote things you’ve not use. Thanks so much bro!

  6. Hey DB!

Awesome post Budd! You did a great job at explaining everything very thoroughly. I think anyone can get a good understanding of what affiliate marketing is and how they can benefit from it by reading your post.

You know, one of the questions I get asked the most when promoting my Affiliate Marketing opportunity is “how long does it take to make money”.

Most people would say that this is a question that everyone would naturally have. However, I disagree! This question tells me that this person is already thinking about quitting even before they get started. Subconsciously, they are thinking that if they don’t make money within a given period of time, they will move on to the next best product. It is the people that jump from opportunity to opportunity the ones that don’t ever reach their income goals with their products.

My answer to that question is, “How fast do you want to make money?” This is never the answer they are looking for. They want me to tell them they’re going to be making thousands of dollars in just a few months. What people fail to realize is that unless you’ve already established a foundation in the past, this is a business and businesses take time and work to build. Starting a business with a lottery or entitlement mentality will keep you at your daytime job for years to come!

Thanks for sharing this post DB.

    • dbbaker says:

      Hi Hector,

I completely agree with you. One of the problems with affiliate marketing is that it so easy to get started as you don’t really need much of anything. That is a problem because most people fail to understand that it is a business like any other business and unless you approach it like a true business you will probably won’t be successful.

      Thanks you for the feedback.

  7. Stuart says:

It is not everyday that inspire people so you pretty much made my day :).

      Best of luck.

Building email list is really crucial for aff marketing success. But of course you really have to offer the products which you personally believe in and tried.

Aff marketing should go hand in hand with the great content this is what could make the difference whet it comes to your credibility, which is in aff very essential.

  9. Good luck on adding on to your list, and thanks for the useful information.

  10. Wow great article. I myself don’t have a business but I am heavily involved at work and my boss just expanded to the online business. This information will definitely reach my boss’s eyes. Many thanks Baker!

  11. Richard says:

Good tips about selecting the right products. It also helps to stick with promoting products that you use yourself. Sometimes if you find a product that you find particularly useful, you can approach the seller and ask if they have an affiliate program so you can partner up with them to give out your referrals.

‘Don’t be lazy’ – what great words! At the beginning of their career many online marketers are very hardworking but with the course of time they become lazy and less responsible. Work hard all the time!!

    • dbbaker says:

      Damn right!!! 🙂

It is something that usually happens after you make little money and than you simply think it will keep coming by itself…

Thank you DB Baker for this info! I’m young but I’ve wanted to become an affiliate marketer for so long…I just didn’t know where to start.

    One question though,
when expanding our email list should we create an entire new email (that doesn’t have anything to do with our personal one)? If so, I’m not really sure what it would be named….And would I want to add family and friends to the list? I can’t imagine trying to sell products to them, that would be bothersome.

    Hey DB,

No date stamp on anything so I don’t know if you will even read this…

Do you have any tips for people that are looking to start offering their product through affiliate marketing?

I’m looking into offering my monthly service plans through affiliates, but I was concerned that I can’t seem to figure out how you associates are being advertised to and recruited effectively.

Got a story on how you were recruited?
