Building a Successful Mailing List From A-Z

build a successful mailing listI have been looking around for sometimes now and I see the problem many people face is getting started with their list, many of them are simply confused and they don’t know where to start.

Since a mailing list is one of the most important tools in the arsenal of every successful internet marketer it wouldn’t be advisable to take it with levity.

There are a lot of factors involved when trying to build a list, it is not just about you setting it up and forgetting about it.

A Killer Product!

After personally testing various type of products, I personally came to discover that it does not matter how quality your squeeze page is, your product pays a huge deal in getting subscribers to your list.

You can easily set up any product and expect subscribers but having a quality product is what makes a difference.

The question that comes on-board now is How do you get a product? It will not be advisable to just setup any product but to effectively research your niche to know what people truly need. You should research to know if people are truly willing to pay for your product, if they are not ready to pay then they will also most likely not give you their email address in order to get it.

For example, I set up two squeeze pages, both offering a free ebook, one about traffic and the other about information marketing. After setting up the squeeze page and trying my best to get traffic to it I discovered the squeeze page of the traffic ebook brought more sign ups than that of the information marketing ebook (even though the info marketing squeeze page is more beautiful than that of the traffic ebook).

When trying to create/get a product to offer as an incentive to build your list, it is very important to make sure that the particular product you will be offerring has not been saturated, if you are trying to give an ebook on making money online then there is more chances of you getting less from your efforts because the niche is dominated with top gurus whom everybody are ready to hear what they are saying.

Another great way to know the demand of your offer is to survey people for it, you can do this by holding a poll on a forum or trying to contact people personally for their presence.

After conclusion has been made on the product you want, you can either try to outsource the creation of your ebook, compile some great posts about the subject into the ebook, conduct interviews with experts for the ebook or try to manually create the product using your knowledge about the the niche

You might also want to make use of PLR memberships sites and one great one I get most of my ebooks from is Money2k.com.

Presentation Matters A Lot!

Many people just setup an ugly page and then begin to offer their products through it, this might affect the rate of your subscription because the way you present your product will determine a lot about your subscribers. Most people judge by appearance and they will not want to enter their emails on an ugly page believing that the owner can be someone with some bad intentions.

I also discovered that adding images to your squeeze page also helps increase your conversion rate because people will have more sense of having your product than when they don’t see an image.

A Little Copywriting Helps!

This is where most people miss it. Having a little copywriting knowledge will help set you apart, people will take many decisions based on your headline and if your headline is poor then they most likely will not wait to read the rest of the page.

It is also very important to make your product irresistable to them by having a great introduction and powerful bullet points that will make them want to get your product instantly.

You should also try to create a feeling of urgency in them because most of them will try to postpone their subscription date only not to come back and subscribe – Let them feel like they need your product badly and that the only time they can get it is now!

Don’t try to waste your time telling stories on your squeeze page, go straight to the point and let them know what is in it for them.

Choosing a Reliable Mailing List Service!

I do pity many people when I see the various types of unreliable mailing list service they use – the word FREE is very powerful and it is what blinds the eyes of many people, don’t try to fall for that word because sooner or later you will pay more than you ought to pay.

I take my mailing list as my life and when anything happens to it I will lose a major part of me, this should be the same for every serious marketer because your list is a very important element to your success.

When trying to choose a reliable mailing list service, there are many recommendations and some of the best in the market are Aweber and Mailchimp. Even though these are some of the most recommended ones I personally use a self hosted mailing list script because I love to have full control and to crown it all the script I use beats aweber in terms of functionality. It has all tracking features you ever want and you can get as many subscribers as you want on your list, the joy of it is that you only pay once. I will tell you straightaway, this mailing list software is not just any type of script and it is not just any price, it costs almost $500 (It is worth it cos they know what they are doing). The name of the script is Interspire Email Marketer.

Promote Your Offer!

You don’t need to think everything ends here, it is far more than this. Your main job comes from promoting your offer.

There are many ways to get subscribers to your list and you should know that without traffic there is no subscriber.

I will be talking about some techniques to get traffic to your squeeze page but if you want something more detailed and practical then get my free traffic ebook

1. Blog Commenting: I know this is an old guy but that doesn’t say it doesn’t work. I haven’t really been using blog commenting to build traffic until I started making use of it to build my list, it was then I started seeing the real power of blog commenting.

The formula might be old and talked about everywhere but that does not make it ineffective, I know someone who’s built his blog on this.

One of my killer tips to get the best from blog commenting is to be the first to comment, try to get a list of about 10 top blogs in your niche, anytime there is  a new post you should try as much as possible to be the first to comment.

One great thing about blog commenting is that you might not see results immediately but try to know which blog works best for you and keep working hard, very soon, your efforts will amount to something.

2. Guest Posting: Another great way to get subscribers to your list is by guest posting for other blogs.

If done right, guest posting can bring great results. I have guest written for a blog which sent me over 50 subscribers in one day and thousands of visitors on the same day, I have also written guest posts that didn’t send me a single visitor. What matters most is for you to choose the blogs you will be guest posting for wisely because you will see a lot of blogs you think will bring results only to see you get nothing.

You might also want to be a weekly contributor on some blogs because this also has a great potential. I have been a weekly contributor for sometimes now on TechnShare.com and I must tell you that this blog has sent me over 500 unique visitors till date – that is the power of guest posting.

Many argue about the quality of the guest post and believe you should only reserve the best for yourself, if you have this intention then you are wasting your time because you will never get results from your guest posts but you should rather put your best into your guest posts.

3. Article Marketing: This is the younger brother of guest posting and if done properly it also has its own effect.

One great tip when trying to get the best from article marketing is to make effective use of your keywords in your articles because many article sites are authority sites and they tend to rank better in search engines – I will also advice you to target more long-tail keywords than short tail keywords.

4. Forum marketing: This also works like a charm and you can get the best result from little efforts, one thing about this method is that forum readers are often smarter and not just anything would work but you must try to prove to them that you know what you are saying by offering a quality product.

I have gotten a lot of traffic from forum even after not posting on it for sometimes now.

There is no point in littering the forums with spam links to your squeeze page but you should try as much as possible to help others solve their problems while maintaining the link to your squeeze page in your signature – The more people you help, the more traffic you gain.

Two great places to kick-start your forum marketing is the Digital Point Forum and The Warrior Forum.

5. Video Marketing: Even though I haven’t used this personally, I have heard a lot about it that it works.

As an average and struggling internet marketer it wouldn’t be great to just fill your vidoes with yourself but you should try to make sure it is very creative because this will help you gain more attention.

Some great places to start with your video marketing are Youtube and Vimeo.

The intention of this post is not how to get traffic so I will rest my case on that for now, but for the main time you might want to get my free traffic ebook and read my post on 21 ways to get traffic.

Building Trust With Your List

When trying to get the best from your list it is not the size of your list that matters but your relationship with your list. It is very important to try as much as possible to make sure your list trust you because the more they trust you the more likely they are to read your mails and the more likely they are to buy from you.

I notice one thing in common among many people building their mailing list, they just build their list and they fail to send any useful tip to their list – this is disastrous.

I try to send emails to my list on a regular occasion and if I don’t have any idea about what to send to them I will send a mail to them with a link to one of my best, most recent articles – This serves two purposes, first, it makes them feel valued and secondly it makes them get used to clicking links in emails.

There are many ways to build trust with your list but what matters most is you making them feel you care and that you are not just there for the money.

You might decide to send them links to high quality ebooks for free or you might want to be sending them some tips and coupons – it all depends on your niche.

There is one word which stands for one thing, that word is FREE and people love it, if you can make effective use of this then you will get the best results.

It is also important to know that sending promotions to them every now and then won’t help, it only reduces your chance of making money from your list.

Conclusion

Following the above tips, you now have a strong list. What matters most is not your list but what you can get from it. It is very important to get started now and begin to build your list, it is your only last resort when things turn around.

      Exactly CJ,

Article Marketing works wonder if properly used.

I do prefer guest posting over article marketing though due to the type of quality backlink and instant traffic I will get.

      What do you think?

      Thanks a lot!

The idea of a mailing list is that you will have contact with your visitors far past the time when they visited your webpage. You’ll be provided with more than one chance to make a sale. Thanks Oni!

    • http://www.ultimatetrafficformula.com Onibalusi Bamidele

      Exactly Sytek,

      That is it!

Since repeat contact works best having a mailing list brings about several opportunities for you to make money online.

Great article Onibalusi! I especially like your point on offering something that your visitors actually want if you want to them to take action.

Surveys are great for this. I’ve inquired in Survey Monkey, although have not personally used it yet.

Building a list takes patience and lots of trial and error until you see what works…but it’s worth the effort. =)

    • http://www.ultimatetrafficformula.com Onibalusi Bamidele

      Exactly Michele,

      You are absolutely right.

Having a quality products really help, with popu domination I do get about 10 njew sign ups every day but after changing thhe product it reduced to 3, I have changed it back and I logged in to see I got over 12 sign ups yesterday – your product matters a great deal.

Yes, it is trial and error after which you must stick to what works :)

      Thanks so much for commenting!

I agree.. having a good mailing list can double or triple your sales in one day. However, you must be sure that your mailing list are the same persons who register to your site or blog and not from some mailing list provider.

    • http://www.ultimatetrafficformula.com Onibalusi Bamidele

      Sure John,

It is very dangerous to add people to a list without them giving you the permission to send them mails.

A mailing list is very important and converts better than many other traffic sources.

  • http://www.windowbox.com/ Ernest @ flowerboxes

Another great one from you my friend. Thanks for the post. I definitely agree on the presentation part. A lot of people are posting not just to give information. They are for sales pitches which is most likely a big turn off online. Presentation is a must and most readers are into information about something that is useful and not to read about products for them to purchase. Thanks my friend. Kudos! Have a good one. More to read from you.
