My Income and Traffic Report – August 2011

july income and traffic reportIt is time for another monthly income and traffic report.

This is currently the ninth monthly income and traffic report on this blog. I have been publishing my income and traffic report on this blog as well as what I learned in the process and the journey has been great so far.

The main aim of this blog is to teach you how to write for traffic and money and I realize that to do this effectively I need to be more practical and transparent. I also publish my monthly reports to motivate people and let them see there is truly opportunity for everybody online.

August Was the Best Month EVER for This Blog

It’s funny I never really noticed this until I took a look into what happened in August. To me August just looked like any other month. In fact, it looked more boring but you will be amazed to see why it is the best month below.

Another great thing about this month is that my income almost doubled that of most months leading to August being the best month ever. A lot of factors made that possible, but I will be eternally grateful to Chris Garrett. I ordered Chris’s critique of this blog for “just” $250 and I’m so proud to say it is the best investment I have ever made in my online business (note that when I say it is the best investment I have actually ordered things in excess of $1500 online in a single month). If you’re a blogger who really wants to take your business to the next level, hire Chris now!

A lot of great things happened in August and here are some of them.

I Was Featured in a Foreign Magazine

This actually happened early September but I’m happy to include it in my August income report since it has been brewing for sometimes now.

While I have written guest posts that have been published on some of the biggest blogs online, one of the best things to ever happen to me was being featured in an Italian magazine. While I’m a great dreamer who knows I will still be featured in a lot more magazines, I never expected to be featured in any Magazine so soon!

I was super excited when I was contacted by the Millionaire Magazine in Italy to send them some pictures of me working and posing as they wanted to write a story about me. They also asked me a few questions and were very excited to see this cool kid making an impact – in fact, they made me feel like a celebrity! :)

If you want to see how I look in the magazine then check out my post about it (with an image) on Facebook here.

If anybody is reading this from Millionaire Magazine in Italy, I say thanks! You guys really rock!

Also, if you’re a media representative or someone who has a link with the media in any country and you think you want to cover my story or you want me to contribute to your media as an expert, feel free to hit me up!

The Big Blog Design

You should have noticed the new design on WritersinCharge.

This is one hell of a project I’m so proud of!

It was designed by the fantastic team at Blazersix.com and I’m so proud of them that I will be hiring them again.

Just as a side note: If you see any design work on this blog note that it is less than 5% my original idea. When it comes to design and things of beauty I’m not that talented (or maybe I am – at some levels) so in most cases I only give a few ideas about what I want and the major work is done by the designer. The new design on this blog is no exception, and the team at Blazersix.com did a fantastic job of helping me come up with something so awesome that I’m very proud of.

This new design isn’t just a scheme to waste money or prove to you that yes, I make some money. It is a well thought out design and something I knew I want from the beginning. Considering the kind of growth I’m experiencing with this blog and my online business lately I’m starting to see it in a new light, not just as a blog but a business and since every smart businessman works to secure his future I’m doing a lot now to ensure the future of this business is solid.

A lot of things were incorporated into this design, including stealth and solid SEO feature to help me improve my rankings, the ability to create my own custom branded landing page that has the look and feel of this blog and that doesn’t depend on any external software and plugin, and the ability to customize various aspects of the blog to my feel. The new design was also implemented to focus on a new and strong brand color that I plan to be building my online business around in the coming years.

There is just a lot about this new design that I might waste your time covering it here so I have decided to write a new blog post later on giving you an insider look at what the design is based on. I’ll be publishing the post anytime soon!

If you are looking for the best designers online hire Blazersix now, you will get the prize of your money and more!

If you also take a look at the fan page for this blog you will notice some cool changes. Those changes were made by my graphic designer (he also designed the graphics for my ecourse) Irfan, so if you are looking for a quality graphics designer make sure you check him out on Facebook.

New Clients

This is definitely one of the reasons for the increase in my income.

Based on Chris’s critique of my blog I also decided to build up my portfolio by getting more clients and as a result I now currently have 4 clients altogether.

I plan to get a few more clients soon so as to increase the amount I make and also the chances of having people to work with in the future so I’ll soon be putting up a hire me page soon.

More Transparency

I have tried as much as I can to avoid showing you the amount of articles I wrote for clients in my income report earlier on since I was only working for one client then. All that has changed now and I can now let you know how many articles I write in a month without it being easy for anyone to know how much a particular client is paying me.

August 2011 Traffic Report

If you take a look at my other monthly reports you will notice a strange pattern. The pattern is that whenever I get record traffic I make less money and whenever I make more money I get less traffic. I’m happy to tell you that August is an exception as I both had record traffic and income.

The great thing about August was that, compared to other months, I only published 10 posts on this blog yet I still got great traffic. What this proves is that the amount of blog post you write isn’t always synonymous to the amount of traffic you get. It doesn’t matter whether you only publish 2 posts in a month or 20 posts, focus on quality!

Below are the traffic screenshots for August.

Clicky Analytics Screenshot

I have also been using Getclicky for sometime now so as to see how the traffic compare to my Google Analytics traffic and it’s funny to say I have paid for a year subscription of one of their plans and haven’t checked my Google Analytics account for almost 2 weeks now since using Clicky.

Here’s the screenshot for the overall traffic I got in August according to Clicky. I’ll be showing Google Analytic’s below this.

august traffic report according to getclicky

Google Analytics Screenshot

So as to give you more insight into the amount of traffic Google Analytics think I got and some other traffic highlights below are my Google analytics screenshot.

Overall Google Analytics Traffic for August

I really can’t help but wonder why there’s a huge difference between Google’s numbers and Clicky’s numbers but I think what matters to me as the blogger isn’t just the number of visitors but how many of them end up becoming subscribers.

Top 10 Traffic Sources

top 10 traffic sources

With over 19,000 visitors alone in August that’s the highest number of visitors I have ever gotten to my blog in any single month. I hope every other month after this becomes better – and I already have plans to make it so (which I will obviously be revealing to you later on this blog).

Let’s go straight to my income report for the month of August.

Income Report

August was the best month ever for this blog in terms of income and I have been making a lot of plans personally to make every other month better. Since I now focus on freelance writing alone full-time you can expect even better income in the coming months. That’s the power of freelance writing for you!

INCOME

Writing Services: $8725

Affiliate Marketing: $85

Total Income: $8810

Total Number of Articles Written for Clients in August: 127

Average Amount I make per Article: $68.7

EXPENSES

Dedicated Server Renewal for 1 Year: $1652.39

Website Design: $3,000

Get Clicky Subscription for 1 Year:$29.99

Mozy Backup: $5.40

Crazy Egg Subscription: $19

Server Monitoring Service: $21

Graphics Design: $220

AWeber: $19

Total Expense: $4966.78

Amount After Expense is Deducted: $3843.22

$3843.22 is more than the amount I make in some months so to still have this huge amount after spending almost $5,000 on my business in one month is really cool.

I’d also like you to know that you don’t need to spend the amount I spend to be a successful writer. You might only spend $10 in a month or less. Even if I didn’t spend a cent in August that doesn’t mean my income will reduce. The reason I’m spending this much is because I want to grow a business and some of the huge expenses on this list such as the design and payment for the server will be the only amount I will pay for those services for the next one year so that is one more year of peace of mind and nothing to worry about.

I’m also happy to tell you that my expenses will begin to see a reduction and I will be going home with almost the whole amount I make in the coming months. Next month will probably be the month I spend the highest amount on my business because I have something cool brewing. I’ll keep you updated in my next income report.

Lessons Learned in August

Since August is the best month for this blog ever you can bet I learned a few more things. Here are the top lessons I learned in August.

1. Investing in Your Business is the Smartest Thing You Can Do:
Some people don’t believe in spending their money. I believe the more money you spend and the more willing you are to spend (and give your money) the more money will come in to you. Especially if that money is spent investing in your business.

August wasn’t just the best month by luck, I consciously planned everything from the beginning. In fact, I planned for this month to be better than this in terms of income.

I recently bought a new laptop to separate client work from personal work. I made up my mind not to install the internet on the other laptop so that I can easily work for clients without being distracted. When I want to read emails, read other blogs or write blog posts I use my main laptop, but when it comes to client work I use the new laptop. And my great discover is that No Internet = No Distractions!

That laptop is one of the investments I did for my business and I’ve made its money back. Another investment is that of this website design and you will be surprised to see the results I get from it later in the future.

It is very important for you to realize that some investments in your business won’t yield results instantly, and some will, either way, don’t rule out any investment just because of the time it takes to get results

The final tip here is that you shouldn’t confuse investment for money. Not all investment is money. There are some other significant investments like time, improving your knowledge and the likes. Anything that can contribute to the growth of your business is an investment so make sure you’re always ready to invest.

2. Amount of Content Does Not Equal Amount of Traffic: Don’t deceive yourself thinking that writing 50 posts in a month will bring you more traffic than writing 10. In fact, I have always seen different results. Focus your efforts on writing more great content that gets read and shared and you can expect the traffic to come.

I only publish articles on this blog on Mondays and Wednesdays, and on sometimes on Fridays and traffic is going strong. I plan to start paying quality writers to contribute to this blog (that doesn’t mean you won’t be seeing me writing here – in fact, since the new design is ready you will be seeing more of me than ever!) once in a while so I might be making that 3 posts a week.

The key to writing for traffic isn’t in the amount of content you write, it is in the quality of the content and the value it provides.

Your best content should be valuable and from personal experience. My most popular post in August gave 10 productivity tips for writers. The tips it gave were from my personal experience and I did my best to make it easy for my readers to digest it. The results? It has already resulted in over 6,000 unique visitors in less than 2 months of publishing it.

3. Money Can Save You Time, Time can Cost You Money: All those time you spend negotiating the price of purchases, all those time you spend using Google to look for cheap services and all those time you spend doing things others can help you do is time wasted. I keep on saying it on this blog, and I will happily say it over and over again that The 48 Laws of Power is my best book till date – it is also the only book I have ever read twice, and I will happily read it again. One great point that resonated with me in the 7th law from the 48 Laws of Power is this Never do Yourself what Others can do for You. As a result of this law I think each of my action through. Will doing this thing save me more money or will it lose me more money?

Our business as writers isn’t only to write, it is also to think. The fact that you are a freelance writer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know how to spend. Is it $1000 you made this month? Don’t be afraid to spend $800 from it as long as it will make you $2000 the following month.

I’m not trying to tell you not to save, and by all means do! What I’m trying to tell you is that all those time you spend hiring someone cheap to do your work for you leads to you wasting your time explaining what to do, revising changes the fellow makes and then losing a lot more income.

The amount with you that you spend isn’t the amount you lose, it is the amount that is coming that you fail to see that you lose.

Not everybody will agree with me here, but that’s life. This is what is working for me and the advice I have for you.

I can as well share a million lessons here but this post will be too long that you won’t want to read it. I have a lot of great advice coming in the future since I will be making a lot of changes. Subscribe to this blog for free so that you’re the first to know.

I read the review Chris did for you and posted on his site. Really dig the new look that you have designed since then – very well done!!

And congrats on all of your accomplishments this month!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

Thanks so much for the comment Ricardo!

Chris’ critique was the best money I have ever spent on my online business and taking his advice was one of the smartest things I have ever done!

Like I said in the article, August initially looked boring and I didn’t notice anything significant until calculating my results at the end of the month. I’m pretty sure I’ll cross the five figure monthly income mark very soon.

Thanks so much for the support!

  • http://www.gideongeorge.com/blog Gideon George @ Self Dev & Onlineine

Wow! That’s very great, the design is just awesome and the write up’s very superb. Viperchill needs to see this post and share it on his blog, I highly recommend.

I believe you will tripple it next month. Bravo!!!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Gideon,

Lol! I’m also loving the design, especially the comment aspect of it. I think you can see why I happily paid so much for the design.

The cool thing about this design is that even though it looks great, it outlook is only a minor aspect of what the design is capable of – there are a lot of awesome things about this design that will skyrocket my blog so fast that people won’t believe it.

Concerning my income, next month is probably the only month I’m not so sure about since the plan I talked about that will take a large aspect of my income will require me to be somewhat busy and distracted – but once that plan is settled, making double, or even triple this becomes easy, and it is then I need to start thinking of great ways to expand my business.

This design has probably been the reason I haven’t done a lot of things on this blog lately, and since I now have a blog that perfectly shows my idea and what I stand for, I can only start working towards delivering the best of my content.

  • http://persuasivearticlemarketing.com Sylviane Nuccio

First off, I want to say, congratulation with your transparency. I was just surprised that you are still at $19 on Aweber, I think you are getting rid of those useless subscribers that do nothing but get your Aweber more expensive LOL!

Reading your post and being real deep in the laws of success and the law of attraction myself, I see that you have all the qualities for success, Onibalusi.

You are a dreamer, and that’s what is so missing in so many people. That is one of the things that I teach with my life coaching.

English is not my mother tongue either, it’s French, so I can relate to you as well. I actually have looked at your blog before you new look, and was thinking of guest posting on your blog. It would be an honor, young fellow! Bravo to you!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Sylviane,

      It’s cool you noticed that…lol!

I was actually using a self-hosted autoresponder software before and I shifted to AWeber due to deliver issues. Even though all the subscribers on my other email list were double opt in I have decided not to import them to my AWeber list since their reason for subscribing is different. I started using AWeber early last month and I currently have over 470 subscribers with them so I guess next month income report will be using their next highest price tag :)

Aha, you said some really great things about me – thanks! :)

I’m always a dreamer and I’m yet to achieve a fraction of my dream but I’ll get there – that’s one thing about dreamers. I keep on seeing a bigger future, a future so big that even if I fail my failure will still be recognized as a success.

Language doesn’t matter, background doesn’t matter and status doesn’t matter…only one thing does, YOU! Focus on cultivating the habits of successful people and you are on your way to the top.

Concerning submitting a guest post, I have some great plans coming out this week or next week so I think that might be a great time to give it a try :)

      • http://persuasivearticlemarketing.com Sylviane Nuccio

Thank for your quick reply Onibalusi!

I’ll wait for you new plans to try my guest posting then. Thanks :)

      Hi Benny,

Thanks so much for the compliments! I’m also glad you’re loving the new design :)

I actually didn’t want to use that picture but since it fits perfectly with the blog and makes me look more cool and friendly (unlike the other picture) I decided to use it. I’m glad you love it!

Aha, I’m also super excited about my results for August!

Thanks so much for the awesome support! I wish you all the best with your endeavors!

  • http://findmyblogway.com Lye Kuek Hin

    Hi Oni,

Great results and nice to see you taking another step forward with a new design. I don’t really like green but this is individual preference. I thought the designer brings out what you want your readers to do when they landed on your blog. He really does it well. Kudos to you for making another sound investment. All the best for the coming months.

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Lye,

Thanks so much for the great support as always Lye!

Aha, blue is personally my favorite color but when I saw this it became irresistible. You’re right. My designers coded the whole thing with the readers in mind.

The redesign is really a sound investment but I just thought about it and the price I paid for it doesn’t seem to affect me – they coded exactly what I paid for and I’m sure this design will bring the best out in this blog over time.

  • http://www.internetentrepreneurconnection.com Hector Avellaneda

Oni! That’s awesome , man! I am so glad that I featured you on my blog because you are an action taker my friend and I am glad to say that I’ve seen you grow to be the great and smart young entrepreneur that you are today.

I love what you had to say about “Money Can Save You Time, Time can Cost You Money” I dont think I could have said it better myself! I think that is probably one of the biggest challenges of the newer entrepreneur – thinking that he should be able to do everything him or herself.

The reality is that not one person can do everything and when you have a good power team around you that is an expert in one aspect of your business they can propel you even further than you could propel yourself.

Yes, you may have to spend some money to do so but the return could be 10-fold.
    Loved your analogy!

PS: I am loving the new look!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Hector,

Aha, contributing that article to your blog was one great thing I’m super excited to do. I really love inspiring others, and it seems you have a great community of entrepreneurs on your blog!

Concerning entrepreneurs learning to spend more, that’s exactly my point. See how much I made in the time it took my designer to complete this design. When compared to the amount I paid it is in 3-folds. The funny thing is that I didn’t really work like someone who was super creative in August so I’m sure I’m yet to uncover my best months.

Investing is something every smart entrepreneur should do and something I will be doing more of in the future. It’s all about results, and if investing in my business means more results for me then why not invest?

The reality is that not one person can do everything and when you have a good power team around you that is an expert in one aspect of your business they can propel you even further than you could propel yourself.

That’s exactly why the 48 Laws of Power is my best book, that is one of the best lessons I have learnt from it. I plan to leverage the power of others a lot more in the future and I can only wait to see how much results I get from doing that. Aside from saving you more money and time getting others to work for you creates opportunities for others, and there’s a lot of positivity that comes from that.

I also really love the new design. Whenever I take a look at it I see friendliness and a welcome and I can guess that’s also how my readers see it. I give all the credit to my awesome designers, they did a really great job!

Onibalusi, it is really exciting to read your monthly updates. Congrats on the milestones reached so far. I am sure this is just the beginning and there is much more you will achieve.

I have a question. How are you managing to average $68.7 per article, while others languish much below that?

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Ajeet,

I’m glad you loved the report!

Concerning being able to earn that much per article it is all about positioning yourself as an expert on your subject. Most people come to me because they see me as an expert and as a result are happy to compensate me well for my services.

I’ve been trying to hire using different techniques, but I can’t seem to get it right. People come through the door, and walk out in a short while. I’ve tried salary raises, better infrastructure, different management approaches, but I can’t seem to find people who “get it”. Anyone here have any ideas on how I can find my people?

    • Saswati

      Hi,
Interesting that you should post a comment like this. Google “look beyond resumes” and the site that comes up is what I’m currently working on. We faced a similar issue like yours and we decided to try and take a crack at changing this.

What we’ve done is completely abandon the classical “resume” and we’re trying to get a sense of the person even before we make a call or an interview.
It has helped immensely in getting us the right set of people.

And what’s more, we’ve identified that hiring that is driven by skills and experience is just not working any more. It’s how you groom someone who aligns with your vision that matters

      • Saswati

Great effort guys! I wish your concept grows and helps a lot of people wake up

“No Internet = No Distractions!” Congrats Oni… this is a real eureka! :)

I think everybody who makes the money, should have two computers, one for client/project work, no distraction, and another for pure entertainment.

I believe this: conditioning ourselves for success is the only way left for writers to achieve long-lasting goals.

    What do you guys say?

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

Exactly Codrut! Being able to separate work from play has impacted my business to a great extent. Focus is key to making more as a writer, and not being distracted by the internet can be a blessing to any writer.

      • http://www.codrutturcanu.com/more-product-affiliate-sales-email/ Codrut Turcanu

It’s fun to see this, but it happens all the time. Reading articles, or lurking in forums doesn’t really help make money, directly, unless you have a specific strategy, or you get paid for doing that, yet — there’s a considerable majority that looks at it as “WORK”.

  • Mayokun

I really love the contents of this post, and can only say one thing – you are destined for greatness.

I’m really glad to hear you think that way. Thanks Mayokun!

Hey Oni, I love this new blog design, it was definitely worth it, anyway the original one actually looked quiet nice, but it’s always nice to change our blogs’ clothes, right?

I have a suggestion for your navigation bar, could you like increase the font size bigger by like 1 or 2? Because it actually looks quiet small (talking about the social proof on the right as well)

Oh and why don’t you put a popular posts widget on your sidebar? :D

Your new avatar looks professional by the way.

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Harrison,

A refresh every once in a while looks great and this design is actually more professional. Plus it also makes it easy for readers to read and digest my content.

Concerning the navigation far, increasing the font will make it difficult for the nav bar to accommodate all those links. I also think the font is quite clear depending on your screen resolution (it is clear at my side).

Concerning a popular post widget, I think that’s a really smart idea! The recent post something isn’t quite as effective so I’ll be changing that asap.

Thanks also for the comment about my new avatar, I guess a lot of things are now new about me :)

I really appreciate your support and contribution to this community, keep on rocking!

      Hi Michael,

Thanks a lot for the nice words, and yes, everything in August (and September) really rocks!

Concerning the colors, I never really thought about it that way but I guess that’s a cool angle!

  • http://www.incomepreneur.com Peter Lusinde

Great post mate! Really useful to know exactly how you operate your blog and how you make your income. It’s obvious you make more money on writing articles than affiliate income… which is understandable. Keep up the good work buddy!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Peter,

Exactly! I display the income reports to show people what’s possible and to also inspire them. Plus displaying how much I made in a particular month makes me want to do anything not to make any less.

It’s definitely best to focus on your strengths, and for me I guess that’s what writing is. I have a lot of plans for other income sources, but those are going to take time!

Really, great tips and amazing new blog design. I am yet to begin my career as a freelance writer because i am preparing for a competitive engineering exam.

Recently i wrote a poem on my blog – i want you to read it and let me know if you liked it, it’s about gadgets. Gadgets and Poems are poles apart but i have tried, please have a look – http://www.wizardjournal.com/new-gadgets/samsung-galaxy-tab-750.html

I hope you liked it, and again, your blog is tight!

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Rakesh,

I think that was a great review accompanied by a great long poem. You did a really great job!

I wish you all the best with your exams and hope you can start freelance writing soon!

      Thanks!

You’re right. Focusing on one thing you’re really good at is the key to making more money online.

  • http://www.infogenra.com/ Raj @ Thesis Theme Customization

The web design is awesome but $3000 for the design is too high.. but it looks says that it is worth to have… Congrats…

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

      Hi Raj,

I really don’t think it is worth any less than $3000. The design is properly coded with little instructions from me and it’s only been installed for 2 days now and almost 100 people have commented on its awesomeness. I think it is EPIC!

      • http://www.wizardjournal.com Rakesh Narang

The design is too good, no doubt about that and the pricing of a design can vary from blog to blog. A complex design like of Engadget.com may have cost them $5000 – $8000 or even more.

Not only the design is what a blogger pays for, it is coding and all other stuff integrated in the blog design.

      Hi George,

Thanks a lot for the compliments!

You’re right – it seems I’m having a lot of expenses lately but I’m sure its only a matter of time before everything settles. The great thing about most of these things I’m spending my time on is that they’re assets, and over time will result in a lot more profits for me.

I also really hope to reach the 10k mark soon!

    Hi Oni,

You have a blog very well designed; I am curious about something – if most of your income comes from doing freelance writing and very little of it from your blog, why is it that you spend so much money on it?

    It seems counter-intuitive to me

    • http://www.youngprepro.com/about Onibalusi

Thanks so much for such a smart question!

Many people believe my blog doesn’t make me money, but it does!

I currently have 4 clients, and I do more than one job for around 2 of them – all of them are recurring clients. I haven’t been online for almost 6 days now, and when I got back, I already have 3 new client offers waiting in my inbox.

The reality is that the money doesn’t come from affiliate reviews on this blog, but every single client I have got in touch with me through this blog. If I didn’t drive traffic, or market myself, there is no how these clients will find me.

Another thing is that I see this blog beyond what will happen in the next 1 year – I see far through to the next 2-3 years, and I know that I will soon make all the money I’m spending on this blog directly from it in just one month. In other words, I’m not building a blog just for the quick bucks, I’m building it as a business that will end up paying on the long run.
